Measurement of the cosmic microwave background polarization lensing power spectrum with the POLARBEAR experiment.

Gravitational lensing due to the large-scale distribution of matter in the cosmos distorts the primordial cosmic microwave background (CMB) and thereby induces new, small-scale B-mode polarization. This signal carries detailed information about the distribution of all the gravitating matter between the observer and CMB last scattering surface. We report the first direct evidence for polarization lensing based on purely CMB information, from using the four-point correlations of even- and odd-parity E- and B-mode polarization mapped over ∼30 square degrees of the sky measured by the POLARBEAR experiment.

OpenMebius: an open source software for isotopically nonstationary 13C-based metabolic flux analysis.

The in vivo measurement of metabolic flux by (13)C-based metabolic flux analysis ((13)C-MFA) provides valuable information regarding cell physiology. Bioinformatics tools have been developed to estimate metabolic flux distributions from the results of tracer isotopic labeling experiments using a (13)C-labeled carbon source. Metabolic flux is determined by nonlinear fitting of a metabolic model to the isotopic labeling enrichment of intracellular metabolites measured by mass spectrometry.

Effects of smoking and shared epitope on the production of anti-citrullinated peptide antibody in a Japanese adult population.

Objective: Anti-citrullinated peptide antibody (ACPA) and rheumatoid factor (RF) are markers to rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Smoking and shared epitope (SE) in HLA-DRB1 are associated with the production of these autoantibodies in RA. Detailed distribution and characterization of ACPA and RF in the general population have remained unclear.

A genome-wide association study of serum levels of prostate-specific antigen in the Japanese population.

Background: Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a useful marker for prostate cancer (PCa) and is widely used for screening of PCa. Previous studies have shown that genetic components influence the levels of PSA, and some of these genetic components would lead to better diagnostic sensitivity and specificity to PCa. However, genetic studies for PSA from Asian countries are limited.

KISS1 gene expression in the developing brain of female pigs in pre- and peripubertal periods.

Puberty is associated with an increase in gonadotropin secretion as a result of an increase in gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion. Kisspeptin is considered to play a key role in puberty onset in many mammalian species, including rodents, ruminants and primates. The present study aimed to determine if changes in hypothalamic expression of the KISS1 gene, encoding kisspeptin, are associated with the onset of puberty in pigs.

Caspase-mediated cleavage of phospholipid flippase for apoptotic phosphatidylserine exposure.

Phospholipids are asymmetrically distributed in the plasma membrane. This asymmetrical distribution is disrupted during apoptosis, exposing phosphatidylserine (PtdSer) on the cell surface. Using a haploid genetic screen in human cells, we found that ATP11C (adenosine triphosphatase type 11C) and CDC50A (cell division cycle protein 50A) are required for aminophospholipid translocation from the outer to the inner plasma membrane leaflet; that is, they display flippase activity.

Large-scale genetic study in East Asians identifies six new loci associated with colorectal cancer risk.

Known genetic loci explain only a small proportion of the familial relative risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). We conducted a genome-wide association study of CRC in East Asians with 14,963 cases and 31,945 controls and identified 6 new loci associated with CRC risk (P = 3.42 × 10(-8) to 9.

Choroidal neovascularization in eyes with choroidal vascular hyperpermeability.

Purpose: We describe the clinical and genetic characteristics of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in eyes with choroidal vascular hyperpermeability (CVH).

Methods: This cross-sectional study consisted of 438 consecutive patients who underwent fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography for macular disease. We used the genotypes of 1576 age-related macular degeneration (AMD) cases and 3248 general population controls as reference groups for genetic association analyses.

Background: Cultural and ethnic differences are present both in subjective and objective measures of patient health, but scoring systems do not always reflect these differences, and so validation of outcomes tools in different cultural settings is important. Recently, a revised version of The Knee Society Score® (KSS 2011) was developed, but to our knowledge, the degree that this tool evaluates clinical symptoms, physical activities, and radiographic grades in the general Japanese population is not known.

Questions/purposes: We therefore asked: (1) how KSS 2011 reflects knee conditions and function in the general Japanese population, in particular evaluating changes with increasing patient age; (2) can objective measures of physical function be correlated with KSS 2011; and (3) does radiographic osteoarthritis (OA) grade correlate with KSS 2011?

Methods: Two hundred twenty-six people in the general Japanese population, aged 35 to 92 years, with and without knee arthritis, voluntarily participated in this cross-sectional study.

Evidence for gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background polarization from cross-correlation with the cosmic infrared background.

We reconstruct the gravitational lensing convergence signal from cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization data taken by the Polarbear experiment and cross-correlate it with cosmic infrared background maps from the Herschel satellite. From the cross spectra, we obtain evidence for gravitational lensing of the CMB polarization at a statistical significance of 4.0σ and indication of the presence of a lensing B-mode signal at a significance of 2.

[Development of pharmacogenomics--guided tailored therapy for colorectal cancer].

It has been well known that inter-individual differences exist in response to chemotherapeutic drugs. A variety of factors including age, gender, intake of other drugs, and inheritance can affect the response to chemotherapeutic drugs. Development of personalized medicine, which enables physicians to tailor the dose to each patient, is urgently needed in daily clinical practice.
