Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of supervised combined physical training and unsupervised physician-prescribed regular exercise on the functional capacity and quality of life of heart failure patients.
Methods: This is a longitudinal prospective study composed of 28 consecutive heart failure with reduced ejection fraction patients randomly divided into two age- and gender-matched groups: trained group ( = 17) and nontrained group ( = 11). All patients were submitted to clinical evaluation, transthoracic echocardiography, the Cooper walk test, and a Quality of Life questionnaire before and after a 12-week study protocol.
Background: Brain death elicits microvascular dysfunction and inflammation, and thereby compromises lung viability for transplantation. As 17β-estradiol was shown to be anti-inflammatory and vascular protective, we investigated its effects on lung injury after brain death in male rats.
Methods: Wistar rats were assigned to: sham-operation by trepanation only (SH, n = 7); brain death (BD, n = 7); administration of 17β-estradiol (280 μg/kg, iv) at 60 minutes after brain death (BD-E2, n = 7).
Background: Coronary artery disease is present in at least 30% of patients with degenerative aortic stenosis (AS). Objectives: To evaluate the predictors of systolic functional recovery after anterior wall AMI in patients undergoing modern therapy (reperfusion, aggressive platelet antiaggregant therapy, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and beta-blockers).
Methods: A total of 94 consecutive patients with AMI with ST-segment elevation were enrolled.

Methods: This was a single-center, prospective, and longitudinal study including 370 consecutive ACS patients in Killip class I or II. BBs were prescribed according to international guidelines and withdrawn if intolerance occurred.
Exercise capacity and quality of life (QOL) are important outcome predictors in patients with systolic heart failure (HF), independent of left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction (LVEF). LV diastolic function has been shown to be a better predictor of aerobic exercise capacity in patients with systolic dysfunction and a New York Heart Association (NYHA) classification ≥ II. We hypothesized that the currently used index of diastolic function E/e' is associated with exercise capacity and QOL, even in optimally treated HF patients with reduced LVEF.

Methods: Patients with anterior acute myocardial infarction (n = 80) were divided according to the geometric pattern: normal (normal left ventricular mass index [LVMI] and normal relative wall thickness [RWT]), concentric remodeling (normal LVMI and increased RWT), concentric hypertrophy (increased LVMI and RWT) and eccentric hypertrophy (increased LVMI and normal RWT).
