This four-year study reports the occurrence of ergot alkaloids (EAs) in cereals intended for animal feeding collected in Slovenia. A total of 517 samples of cereals were analysed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry for the presence of EAs. The sample set included wheat, rye, triticale, oat, spelt and barley.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed how different salting methods and the sex of pigs affect the quality of Slovenian dry-cured ham, Kraški pršut, using 48 hams from 24 pigs (12 gilts and 12 castrates).
  • The hams were divided into two groups: standard salting for 18 days (HS hams) and reduced salting for 10 days (LS hams), revealing that shortened salting decreased salt content but increased proteolysis, affecting texture and color.
  • Additionally, gilts displayed more proteolysis than castrates, impacting quality, though lipid oxidation levels were similar between the two sexes.

Chemotherapy has cachectic effects, but it is unknown whether cytostatic agents alter skeletal muscle proteolysis. We hypothesized that chemotherapy-induced alterations in protein synthesis should result in the increased incidence of abnormal proteins, which in turn should stimulate ubiquitin-proteasome-dependent proteolysis. The effects of the nitrosourea cystemustine were investigated in skeletal muscles from both healthy and colon 26 adenocarcinoma-bearing mice, an appropriate model for testing the impact of cytostatic agents.
