Studying the properties and phase diagram of iron at high-pressure and high-temperature conditions has relevant implications for Earth's inner structure and dynamics and the temperature of the inner core boundary (ICB) at 330 GPa. Also, a hexagonal-closed packed to body-centered cubic (bcc) phase transition has been predicted by many theoretical works but observed only in a few experiments. The recent coupling of high-power laser with advanced x-ray sources from synchrotrons allows for novel approaches to address these issues.

The main bottlenecks in current research include fabricating highly selective, stable, and scalable catalysts, as well as effectively harnessing the full spectrum of light, particularly the low-energy, long-wavelength portion. Herein, we report a novel composite photocatalyst system based on lead halide perovskites embedded in functionalized MOF glass.

Above where NaNiO is rhombohedral, diffraction measurements show the absence of a cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion, accompanied by an increase in the unit cell volume. Using neutron total scattering, solid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) experiments as local probes of the structure we find direct evidence for a displacive, as opposed to order-disorder, Jahn-Teller transition at .

Ru substitution enhances the macroscopic ferromagnetic contributions, whose origin is here elucidated. In particular, soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) data indicate that the spin moments of Mn and Ru are aligned in opposite directions, with the effective magnetic moments of Ru being about 1 order of magnitude smaller than for Mn.

To showcase its application, Ce-doped fluorapatite [Ca(PO)F] is revisited as a representative of a material difficult to analyze by conventional multi-shell least-squares fitting of EXAFS spectra. The software is open source and publicly available.

Ge and Se K-edge XAS data allowed simultaneous tracking of the correlated local structural and electronic changes at both Ge and Se sites. Thanks to the simultaneous analysis of extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) signals of both edges, reliable quantitative information about the evolution of the first neighbor Ge-Se distribution could be obtained.

Understanding the mechanism of the interaction between the Cu-CHA catalyst and SO is crucial for elucidating the SO poisoning and development of efficient catalysts for SCR reactions. Earlier we have shown that SO reacts with the [Cu(NH)O] complex that is formed in the pores of Cu-CHA upon activation of O in the NH-SCR cycle.

Given their potential clinical applications for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, it is essential to understand what becomes of them once they are within the body. With this aim, here we have followed the intracellular long-term fate of magnetosomes in two cell types: cancer cells (A549 cell line), because they are the actual target for the therapeutic activity of the magnetosomes, and macrophages (RAW 264.

Hard X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is frequently applied in catalysis and gas sorption studies to monitor changes in oxidation states, coordination numbers, and interatomic distances of active sites under and conditions. However, transmission XAS data can reveal also the change in the total amount of guest species adsorbed on the whole sample. Surprisingly, to the best of our knowledge, the latter property has never been exploited.

However, the presence of a small amount of SO in diesel exhaust gases leads to a severe reduction in the low-temperature activity of these catalysts. To shed light on the nature of such deactivation, we characterized a Cu-CHA catalyst under well-defined exposures to SO using X-ray absorption spectroscopy.

The CuO square planar units are stable in the studied pressure range, with Cu-O distances that are approximately constant up to 5 GPa, and then decrease slightly up to 17 GPa.

Using singular value decomposition, this variation is understood as a linear combination of two components. The dominating component is associated with the Er magnetization, while the second contribution is identified as an induced signal from the Fe sites.

The combination of complementary techniques in the characterization of catalysts under working conditions is a very powerful tool for an accurate and in-depth comprehension of the system investigated. In particular, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) coupled with diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and mass spectroscopy (MS) is a powerful combination since XAS characterizes the main elements of the catalytic system (selecting the absorption edge) and DRIFTS monitors surface adsorbates while MS enables product identification and quantification. In the present manuscript, a new reactor cell and an experimental setup optimized to perform time-resolved experiments on heterogeneous catalysts under working conditions are reported.

Three phases-zincblende (ZB), mixed cinnabar-ZB and rocksalt (RS)-are well distinguished in different pressure intervals. The bond compressibility measured by EXAFS in the ZB phase is slightly smaller than the one measured by diffraction and decreases significantly faster when the pressure increases; the difference is attributed to the effect of relative vibrations perpendicular to the Cd-Te bond.

The noble gases are the most inert group of the periodic table, but their reactivity increases with pressure. Diamond-anvil-cell experiments and ab initio modelling have been used to investigate a possible direct reaction between xenon and oxygen at high pressures. We have now synthesized two oxides below 100 GPa (Xe2O5 under oxygen-rich conditions, and Xe3O2 under oxygen-poor conditions), which shows that xenon is more reactive under pressure than predicted previously.
