Prognostic factors of head and neck cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma: a systematic review.

Background: Head and neck cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (HNCSCC) is a non-melanoma skin cancer that is mostly caused by solar ultraviolet radiation exposure. While it usually has an excellent prognosis, a subset of patients (5%) develops nodal metastasis and has poor outcomes. The aim of this study was to systematically review the literature and evaluate the prognostic factors of HNCSCC in order to better understand which patients are the most likely to develop metastatic disease.

How Consistent Is Competent? Examining Variance in Psychomotor Skills Assessment.

Purpose: Direct assessment of trainee performance across time is a core tenet of competency-based medical education. Unlike variability of psychomotor skills across levels of expertise, performance variability exhibited by a particular trainee across time remains unexplored. The goal of this study was to document the consistency of individual surgeons' technical skill performance.

Teaching communication skills to OTL-HNS residents: multisource feedback and simulated scenarios.

Background: Effective communication has been linked to a reduction in adverse events and improved patient compliance. Currently in Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery (OTL-HNS) residency programs, there is limited explicit teaching of communication skills. Our objective was to implement an educational program on communication skills for residents using multisource assessment in several simulation-based contexts throughout residency.

Validity evidence as a key marker of quality of technical skill assessment in OTL-HNS.

Objective: Quality monitoring of assessment practices should be a priority in all residency programs. Validity evidence is one of the main hallmarks of assessment quality and should be collected to support the interpretation and use of assessment data. Our objective was to identify, synthesize, and present the validity evidence reported supporting different technical skill assessment tools in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery (OTL-HNS).

Toolbox of assessment tools of technical skills in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery: A systematic review.

Objective: To support the development of programs of assessment of technical skills in the operating room (OR), we systematically reviewed the literature to identify assessment tools specific to otolaryngology-head and neck surgery (OTL-HNS) core procedures and summarized their characteristics.

Methods: We systematically searched Embase, MEDLINE, PubMed, and Cochrane to identify and report on assessment tools that can be used to assess residents' technical surgical skills in the operating room for OTL-HNS core procedures.

Results: Of the 736 unique titles retrieved, 16 articles met inclusion criteria, covering 11 different procedures (in otology, rhinology, laryngology, head and neck, and general otolaryngology).

Clinical presentation and airway management of tracheal atresia: A systematic review.

Objectives: Tracheal atresia (TA) is a rare congenital condition that typically requires an unexpected and emergent resuscitation in the delivery room. The mortality rate associated is very high, with only a few long-term survival cases reported. We describe the findings of a systematic review on the clinical presentation and airway management of TA.
