Acute severe ulcerative colitis (ASUC) can lead to systemic inflammation and insulin resistance, with high-dose steroid treatment potentially worsening these effects.
A study was conducted on 15 patients with ASUC to measure metabolic stress and insulin resistance before and three weeks after discharge, utilizing various assessment methods.
Results showed significant insulin resistance and high fasting glucose levels during admission, which improved after three weeks but remained elevated compared to healthy controls, highlighting the need for monitoring post-treatment.
