Article Synopsis
  • HTLV-1 is a virus linked to various diseases, but many associated conditions remain poorly understood, leading to challenges in diagnosis.
  • Skin issues like infectious dermatitis are common in HTLV-1 patients, but other manifestations, such as erythema nodosum (EN), may also occur.
  • A new case highlights the need to consider HTLV-1 in diagnosing EN, particularly in areas where the virus is prevalent, especially since the patient had been asymptomatic for a long time.

Human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is classically associated with the HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), although the mechanisms of this neurological disorder remain unclear. In addition, some patients who develop "minor" neurological signs that do not meet diagnostic criteria for HAM/TSP are classified as asymptomatic carriers. This study aims to demonstrate the neurological symptoms of Brazilian patients living with HTLV-1 classified as not-HAM.
