An increasing number of studies have shown that the local release of nitric oxide (NO) from hydrogels stimulates tissue regeneration by modulating cell proliferation, angiogenesis, and inflammation. The potential biomedical uses of NO-releasing hydrogels can be expanded by enabling their application in a fluid state, followed by controlled gelation triggered by an external factor. In this study, we engineered a hydrogel composed of methacrylated hyaluronic acid (HAGMA) and thiolated gelatin (GELSH) with the capacity for in situ photo-cross-linking, coupled with localized NO release.

Effect of postoperative tranexamic acid on recurrence rate and complications in chronic subdural hematomas patients: preliminary results of a randomized controlled clinical trial.

Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is a frequent neurosurgical disease which mainly affects elderly patients. Tranexamic acid (TXA) has been hypothesized as an oral agent to avoid CSDH progression and/or recurrence. We performed an evaluation to determine whether the postoperative use of TXA reduces recurrence rate.

The design of bioresorbable vascular stents (BVS) capable of releasing nitric oxide (NO) at the implant site may enable BVS to mimic the antiplatelet, antiproliferative, and pro-endothelial actions of NO, overcoming complications of BVS such as late thrombosis and restenosis. In this study, the fabrication of BVS composed of methacrylated poly(dodecanediol citrate-co-dodecanediol S-nitroso-mercaptosuccinate) (mP(DC-co-DMSNO)), a novel elastomeric, bioabsorbable, and photocurable copolyester, containing covalently bound S-nitrosothiol groups in the carbon backbone of the polymer, is reported. The mP(DC-co-DMSNO) stents are manufactured via photoinduced 3D printing and allow deployment via a self-expansion process from a balloon catheter.

Brain cryptococcoma mimicking a glioblastoma in an immunocompetent patient: A rare case report and comprehensive review.

Background: Cryptococcosis is an invasive fungal infection primarily affecting lungs and potentially spreading to the central nervous. This fungal infection might be misdiagnosed as other infection diseases, such as tuberculosis; granulomatous diseases, like sarcoidosis; and even neoplastic diseases. Some previous reports described cases of cryptococcomas resembling brain tumors.

Bone density and quality in patients treated with direct-acting oral anticoagulants versus warfarin.

Introduction: Direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are therapeutic alternatives to warfarin that act independently of vitamin K, thus not affecting bone matrix formation. The aim of this study was to compare bone mineral density (BMD) and microarchitecture in patients treated with DOACs versus warfarin.

Methods: Cross-sectional, observational study in patients using oral anticoagulants for >1 year and a paired control group (CG).

Spontaneous Regression of a Clival Chordoma: An Unusual Case Report.

Introduction:  Chordoma is a malignant and aggressive tumor originating from remnants of the primitive notochord and usually involving the axial skeleton. Spontaneous regression of clival chordomas was described recently. We present the third case report of spontaneous regression of a clival chordoma and discuss similarities of cases and implications for clinical practice.

Endoscopic resection of sellar and suprasellar epidermoid cyst: report of two cases and review of literature.

Introduction: Epidermoid cysts (EC) are lesions developing from neuroectodermal epithelial cells. They represent 1-2% of all intracranial tumors and are usually found in cerebellopontine angle and parasellar regions. To the best of our knowledge, only 27 cases have been reported of EC in sellar and suprasellar region.

Long term follow-up of shunted idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus patients: a single center experience.

Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a condition characterized by gait disturbance, dementia and/or urinary incontinence and enlarged ventricular system due to disturbance of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). This study aims to describe the long-term experience with patients with iNPH submitted to ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) with the programmable valve STRATA® (Medtronic). We prospectively selected a cohort of patients with a diagnosis of iNPH from January 2010 to April 2013 in a Brazilian tertiary hospital.

Lumbar disc herniation with contralateral radiculopathy: a systematic review on pathophysiology and surgical strategies.

Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is a relatively common pathology usually presenting with unilateral radiculopathy ipsilateral to the disc herniation. Some patients can present with contralateral radicular symptoms. The objective of this article is to review the current literature on lumbar disc herniations with contralateral radiculopathy regarding its pathophysiology and surgical strategies.

Improvement of Hemichorea Following Surgical Resection of a Putaminal Cavernous Angioma: Case Report and Review of Literature.

Background: Hemichorea may point to a structural lesion in the contralateral basal ganglia with a large list of possible causes. Cavernous angioma may be rarely a possible cause for acute appearance of this movement disorder.

Case Description: We present a rare case of a 32-year-old female patient with hemichorea caused by a cavernoma (or cavernous angioma) in the contralateral insula and putamen with complete improvement of symptoms with surgical resection of the lesion.

Clinical performance of fixed-pressure Sphera Duo® hydrocephalus shunt.

Introduction: Cerebral hydrodynamics complications in shunted patients are due to the malfunction of the system. The objective of this retrospective, single-center, single-arm cohort study is to confirm the safety and performance of Sphera® Duo when used in adult patients suffering from hydrocephalus, pseudotumor cerebri or arachnoid cysts.

Sporadic hemangioblastoma of cauda equina: An atypical case report.

Background: Hemangioblastomas account for about 1%-3% of all central nervous system tumors. They are usually associated with the Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome and typically occur in the posterior fossa, or throughout the spinal neuraxis. Here, we report the unusual case of a sporadic cauda equina hemangioblastoma.

Preparation of Organic Nitrates from Aryldiazoacetates and Fe(NO)·9HO.

A thermal protocol is reported for the formal insertion of nitric acid into aryldiazoacetates using Fe(NO)·9HO. This strategy is mild and high yielding and allows the preparation of a large variety of members of an unprecedented family of organic nitrates. The nitrate group can be also readily transformed into other functional groups and heterocyclic moieties and can possibly allow new biological explorations of untapped potential associated with their NO-releasing ability.

Role of Transnasal Endoscopic Surgery in the Treatment of Superficial Siderosis of Central Nervous System Secondary to Clivus Arachnoidocele: Report of Successful Case and Literature Review.

Background: Superficial siderosis (SS) of the central nervous system is a disease characterized by deposition of hemosiderin in the leptomeninges (arachnoid and pia mater) due to chronic intradural bleeding. One of the etiologic mechanisms proposed is a dural breach secondary to trauma with a consequent arachnoidocele in contact with an exuberant venous plexus. We describe a unique case of clival arachnoidocele treated by an endoscopic endonasal approach and closure of the defect with fat and nasoseptal flap.

Analysis of survival in patients with brain metastases treated surgically: Impact of age, gender, oncologic status, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, number and localization of lesions, and primary cancer site.

Objective: To evaluate the survival of patients with brain metastases treated surgically according to the potentially involved factors.

Methods: 71 patients treated surgically were analyzed with the diagnosis of brain metastases during the period from January 2011 to November 2014, totaling 47 months of follow-up. The Kaplan-Meier curve method was used for survival analysis.

Development of the Brazilian Portuguese version of the "Grading scale for idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus": cross-cultural adaptation, reliability and validity.

Objective: The current study translated to Portuguese and validated the normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) scale originally developed in English as the Grading Scale for Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.

Methods: Following Guillemin's validation protocol, the last version of the Portuguese NPH scale was applied to 121 consecutive patients with a diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus (73 men and 48 women) from the Group of Cerebral Hydrodynamics from July 2010 to March 2012.
