Smoking, a major behavioral health burden, causes preventable and premature deaths globally. Nicotine, the addictive component present in tobacco products and Electronic cigarettes (E-cigarettes, vape), can bind to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the brain to trigger a dopamine release that reinforces smoking. Despite the widespread usage of nicotine, its mechanisms of toxicity, particularly in e-cigarettes, are poorly understood.

Article Synopsis
  • - Environmental enrichment in captivity is meant to improve the well-being of fish by simulating their natural habitat, but its effects on fish reproduction are not well understood.
  • - In a study with twospot astyanax larvae, fish raised in enriched environments (with PVC pipes, stones, and plants) exhibited healthier reproductive structures compared to those in sterile environments.
  • - Results indicated that sterile-reared fish showed early spawning and potential reproductive issues, leading to lower-quality offspring, whereas enriched fish had better-developed gametes and healthier larval outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare periodontal health in teeth restored with ceramic crowns, evaluating the effects of crown lengthening surgery on clinical parameters like plaque index and gingival health.
  • A total of 22 patients with 41 crowns participated, divided into two groups: those who underwent crown-lengthening and those who did not.
  • Results showed that while some periodontal measures improved, there were no significant differences between groups regarding most follow-up periods; crown-lengthening surgery mainly influenced probing depth and clinical attachment level specifically at treated sites.

Recently, social isolation measures were crucial to prevent the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. However, the lack of social interactions affected the population mental health and may have long-term consequences on behavior and brain functions. Here, we evaluated the behavioral, physiological, and molecular effects of a social isolation (SI) in adult zebrafish, and whether the animals recover such changes after their reintroduction to the social environment.

Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) becomes an interesting epidemiological approach to monitoring the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 broadly and non-invasively. Herein, we employ for the first time WBE, associated or not with the PEG 8000 precipitation method, for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in samples of raw or treated wastewater from 22 municipal wastewater treatment stations (WWTPs) located in Salvador, the fourth most populous city in Brazil. Our results demonstrate the success of the application of WBE for detecting SARS-CoV-2 in both types of evaluated samples, regardless of the usage of PEG 8000 concentration procedure.

Feline leishmanial infection is reported worldwide, but the epidemiological role of domestic cats in the leishmaniasis cycle remains unclear, and cats might act as cryptic reservoir hosts in endemic areas with no feline leishmaniosis cases. Considering that, a serological screening for anti-Leishmania spp. antibodies was performed by indirect immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT) in 389 necropsied cats' serum samples from a new visceral leishmaniasis transmission area with no feline leishmanial infection reported to unveil if the cats are being exposed to the parasite.
