Many studies have assessed the possible lateralization deficits of schizophrenics, and the results usually suggest left hemisphere dysfunction. Nevertheless, they have been variable. This may have been due to cognitive demand of the different tasks, not to changes in brain lateralization itself.

The effects of synthetic salmon calcitonin on primary Sertoli cell-enriched cultures and on an established cell line (TM4 cells, derived from immature mouse Sertoli cells) were studied. Synthetic salmon calcitonin stimulated the conversion of [3H]adenine to [3H]cyclic AMP in both cell systems. In addition, this peptide stimulated the secretion of rABP in primary Sertoli cell-enriched cultures prepared from rat testis.

To investigate this possibility, the effect of synthetic salmon calcitonin on the TM3 Leydig cell line (derived from immature mouse Leydig cells) and on primary Leydig cell-enriched preparations was examined. Synthetic salmon calcitonin stimulated the conversion of [3H]adenine to [3H]cyclic AMP in TM3 cells.

Which cell types secrete activin in vivo is not known. TM3 cells, a Leydig-derived cell line, contained messenger RNAs that hybridized with human beta A and beta B complementary DNA probes and were similar in size to the porcine messenger RNA for the beta subunits of inhibin.

This paper attempts to distinguish between inattention and inefficiency as the cause of the eye movement problems of schizophrenic subjects. It focuses on their release of fast saccadic eye movements in four different situations: interrupting smooth tracking, as double-jumps in refixation, and as inadvertent departures from steady fixation or too-early prediction moves. If an attention deficit causes saccades during tracking, they should be reduced only for schizophrenic subjects in the dark, when there is no contrasting background.

Geographers in the Soviet Union and the United States have joined in critical appraisal of their experience in studying environmental change. This initial report is on some promising approaches, such as the reconstruction of earlier landscape processes, modeling of the dynamics of present-day landscapes, analysis of causes and consequences of anthropogenic changes in specified regions, appraisal of social response to change, and enhanced geographic information systems supported by detailed site studies.

In the peripheral blood there was a significant decrease in the percent and absolute number of B lymphocytes in mastitic cows (n = 29; 17.1 +/- 10.

Since extracts of testicular homogenates also contain factor(s) with biological properties similar to FRP, including inhibition of granulosa cell aromatase, we examined the effects of ovarian FRP on testicular function. Forty-five-day-old rats received daily FRP injections (100 micrograms or 300 micrograms).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe primary structure of factor VIII consists of 2332 amino acids that exhibit 3 distinct structural domains, including a triplicated region (A domains), a unique region of 909 amino acids (B domain), and a carboxy-terminal duplicated region (C domains), that are arranged in the order A1-A2-B-A3-C1-C2. The B domain (residues 741-1648) of factor VIII is lost when factor VIII is activated by thrombin, which proteolytically processes factor VIII to active subunits of Mr 50,000 (domain A1), 43,000 (domain A2), and 73,000 (domains A3-C1-C2). To determine if the B domain is required for factor VIII coagulant activity, a variant was constructed by using recombinant DNA techniques in which residues 797-1562 were eliminated.

Leydig cells cultured in a serum-free medium containing transferrin, vitamin E, and insulin (5 micrograms/ml) maintained fairly constant both hCG receptors and hCG responsiveness. When they were cultured for 3 days in the same medium without insulin, there was a dramatic decline (more than 80%) in both hCG receptor number and hCG responsiveness.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFFour forms of acid phosphatase have been found in the testicular tissue of many mammalian species, but their exact cellular site has remained obscure. In this work, acid phosphatases have been studied in different reproductive organs of the male rat, in somatic cell lines derived by cloning from both rat and mouse testes, in primary cultures of rat Sertoli cells, and in isolated spermatogenic cells of the mouse. Among the reproductive organs, preputial glands show the highest specific activities with p-nitrophenyl phosphate as substrate, followed by the testicular tissue and the different regions of the epididymis.

We have examined adenylate cyclase (AC) in the M2R melanoma cell line, a novel clone of transplantable B16 melanoma cells. It has been found that activity of this enzyme is highly responsive to beta-melanotropin (beta-MSH) and other hormones possessing melanotropic activity (e.g.

Sertoli cell-enriched primary cultures were prepared from the testes of 20-day-old rats, and rTF and rABP were assayed in medium from the same culture. There was a strong effect of cell density on both rABP and rTF secretion per cell, with increased secretion per cell at high densities.
