A meticulous examination of the oral cavity is an essential part of the initial newborn assessment. The differential diagnosis can involve benign and self-limiting lesions to those lesions compromising quality of life. We present a clinical case of a newborn born with a purple, hard tumour on the hard palate that spontaneously regressed, being thus compatible with the case of a sucking blister.

Dietary chemoprevention has emerged as a cost-effective approach to control most prevalent chronic diseases including cancer. Changes in dietary patterns and lifestyle, such as increasing the consumption of fruits and vegetables and more balanced intakes of meat and plant foods, are a practical and effective strategy for reducing the incidence of chronic diseases. Phytonutrients (or phytochemicals) are found in eatable fruits and vegetables that, daily ingested, may exhibit a potential for modulating human metabolism in a manner favourable for the prevention of chronic and degenerative diseases.

Many of the prior papers describing Japanese medaka embryo injections omit key information. As such, this article aims to give an in-depth explanation as to how the NanoJect III microinjector can be used for this purpose.

Our study aims to gain an in-depth understanding of the experience of bereaved relatives of patients who died in palliative care units during the COVID-19 pandemic. The phenomenological research design included sixteen family members of hospitalized palliative patients who died from November 2021 to June 2022.

Methods: Retrospective study, carried out in a pediatric hospital between March 2020 and September 2021, with patients with COVID-19 who were diagnosed with AKI, studying information present in medical records such as comorbidities, age, gender and use of nephrotoxic medications.
Results: We studied 40 cases, and male individuals were significantly more affected (62.
Photoswitchable -functionalized tetrafluorinated azobenzene-modified siRNAs (F-azo-siRNAs) were synthesized using solid-phase phosphoramidite chemistry. The activity of an F-azo-siRNA targeting enhanced green fluorescence protein (eGFP) in transgenic (Tg) Japanese Medaka () was reversibly photocontrolled with blue (470 nm) and green (530 nm) light, to activate and inactivate the siRNA, respectively. This study highlights the first reversible study with photoswitchable siRNA.

The long aliphatic substituents proved to be beneficial in terms of the synthetic efficiency of the complexes, compared to previously reported methyl substitution. The complexes demonstrated excellent suitability for the KA coupling reaction, providing quaternary carbon-containing propargylic amines in yields up to 95 %, under solvent-free conditions.

These metals share carcinogenic mechanisms, suggesting at least additive effects. Our goals were to assess carcinogenic risks from Pb and Cd intake detected in various CM and SB brands on the Portuguese market and to determine the relative contributions of Pb and Cd.

These molecules are practically insoluble in water, and for biological applications, it became necessary to complex them with cyclodextrins (CDs), which influence their bioavailability in the target organism. In this work, we studied two coumarins, and it was possible to conclude that there were structural differences between 4,7-dimethyl-2-chromen-2-one (DMC) and 7-methoxy-4-methyl-2-chromen-2-one (MMC)/β-CD that were solubilized in ethanol, frozen, and lyophilized (FL) and the mechanical mixtures (MM).

The primary aim of this study was to assess the quality of newborn healthcare and resuscitation practices in Portuguese delivery rooms, comparing current practices with the 2021 European Resuscitation Council guidelines. The secondary aim was to compare the consistency of practices between tertiary and non-tertiary centers across Portugal.

Introduction: Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a neurodegenerative brain disease that affects patient's functionality and quality of life. Physiotherapy should be recommended at the time of diagnosis to slow the progression of disability and enhance the quality of life of these patients.
Clinical Presentation: Here, we describe three cases of patients with PSP, outlining their motor and non-motor symptoms and examining their clinical progression with physiotherapy intervention.
Nowadays, there is an increased consumption of plant-based protein beverages like soy beverages (SBs) as substitutes for cow milk (CM). Both accumulate toxic metals like lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and manganese (Mn), which, although essential, are neurotoxic at high levels. Metals can also perturb the normal development of children.

Objective: To investigate the efficacy of high-intensity respiratory muscle training (combined inspiratory and expiratory muscle training) in improving inspiratory and expiratory muscle strength, inspiratory muscle endurance, peak cough flow, dyspnea, fatigue, exercise capacity, and quality of life in this population.
Methods: A randomized controlled trial, concealed allocation, blinded assessments, and intention-to-treat analysis will be carried out. Altogether, 34 individuals with PD (age ≥ 50 years old, with maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP) <80cmH2O or maximum expiratory pressure (MEP) <90cmH2O) will be recruited.
Microalgae attract interest worldwide due to their potential for several applications. is one of the first in vitro cultured algae due to their rapid growth and handling easiness. Within this genus, cells exhibit a highly resistant wall and propagate both auto- and heterotrophically.

This study aims at analysing the implementation status of the EHDS proposal in Portugal, particularly the points concerning the primary use of health data. The proposal was scanned for the points that gave member states a direct responsibility to implement actions, and a literature review and interviews were conducted to assess the implementation status of these policies in Portugal This study found that Portugal is well advanced in the implementation of policies concerning the rights of natural persons in relation to the primary use of their personal health data, but also identified challenges, which include the lack of a common interoperability framework for the exchange of electronic health data.

Objective: Long term behavioural disturbances and interventions in healthy habits (mainly eating and physical activity) are the primary cause of childhood obesity. Current approaches for obesity prevention based on health information extraction lack the integration of multi-modal datasets and the provision of a dedicated Decision Support System (DSS) for health behaviour assessment and coaching of children.
Methods: Continuous co-creation process has been applied in the frame of the Design Thinking Methodology, involving children, educators and healthcare professional in the whole process.
Background: The relationship between Multidrug Resistant-Gram Negative Bacteria (MDR-GNB) infection and colonization in critically ill COVID-19 patients has been observed, however, it is still poorly understood. This study evaluated the risk factors for acquiring MDR-GNB in patients with severe COVID-19 in Intensive Care Units (ICU).
Methods: This is a nested case-control study in a cohort of 400 adult patients (≥ 18 years old) with COVID-19, hospitalized in the ICU of 4 hospitals in the city of Curitiba, Brazil.
Lymphedema is originated from the reduced lymphatic flow, causing a volumetric increase in the affected region and is physically and emotionally uncomfortable. Surgical intervention is considered the best treatment option as it brings both functional and aesthetic benefits. This is a report from the case of a previously healthy 45-year-old man who developed idiopathic penoscrotal giant lymphedema.

There is global acknowledgment that humane methods in animal research are a priority, but few environmental effects monitoring programs use nonlethal methods for fish. The goal of the present study was to determine the impacts of sampling small volumes of blood in larger-bodied fish on survival and healing. In addition to evaluating survival following blood sampling, we evaluated the utility of dried blood spots as an alternative for sample processing and storage in the field.
