Blind deconvolution using a variational approach to parameter, image, and blur estimation.

Following the hierarchical Bayesian framework for blind deconvolution problems, in this paper, we propose the use of simultaneous autoregressions as prior distributions for both the image and blur, and gamma distributions for the unknown parameters (hyperparameters) of the priors and the image formation noise. We show how the gamma distributions on the unknown hyperparameters can be used to prevent the proposed blind deconvolution method from converging to undesirable image and blur estimates and also how these distributions can be inferred in realistic situations. We apply variational methods to approximate the posterior probability of the unknown image, blur, and hyperparameters and propose two different approximations of the posterior distribution.

Scale-free foraging patterns are widespread among animals. These may be the outcome of an optimal searching strategy to find scarce, randomly distributed resources, but a less explored alternative is that this behaviour may result from the interaction of foraging animals with a particular distribution of resources. We introduce a simple foraging model where individual primates follow mental maps and choose their displacements according to a maximum efficiency criterion, in a spatially disordered environment containing many trees with a heterogeneous size distribution.

We identified a direct interaction between the neuronal transmembrane protein calsyntenin-1 and the light chain of Kinesin-1 (KLC1). GST pulldowns demonstrated that two highly conserved segments in the cytoplasmic domain of calsyntenin-1 mediate binding to the tetratricopeptide repeats of KLC1. A complex containing calsyntenin-1 and the Kinesin-1 motor was isolated from developing mouse brain and immunoelectron microscopy located calsyntenin-1 in association with tubulovesicular organelles in axonal fiber tracts.

In Drosophila melanogaster two high molecular weight tropomyosin isoforms, historically named heavy troponins (TnH-33 and TnH-34), are encoded by the Tm1 tropomyosin gene. They are specifically expressed in the indirect flight muscles (IFM). Their N-termini are conventional and complete tropomyosin sequences, but their C-termini consist of different IFM-specific domains that are rich in proline, alanine, glycine and glutamate.

Mortality rates can approach 100% depending on the patient's underlying disease and form of zygomycosis. We report here on the unusual case of a patient with acute myelogenous leukemia and zygomycosis unresponsive to monotherapy with liposomal amphotericin B, who responded favorably following the addition of the echinocandin caspofungin acetate.

Bortezomib induces selective depletion of alloreactive T lymphocytes and decreases the production of Th1 cytokines.

We explored the ability of the proteasome inhibitor bortezomib, which prevents nuclear factor kappaB (NF-kappaB) activation, to block T-cell activation, proliferation, and survival within alloreactive compared with resting T cells. For this purpose, T cells were stimulated with PHA, alphaCD3/alphaCD28, or allogeneic dendritic cells or through mixed lymphocyte cultures. NF-kappaB expression increased in activated T lymphocytes compared with resting T cells.

A Latin American registry of implantable cardioverter defibrillators: the ICD-LABOR study.

Objective: Despite the progress that has been reached in emergency medical systems and resuscitation, sudden cardiac death (SCD) continues to be the major cause of the death, and remains a significant public health problem. In this publication we are reporting our Latin American experience in the secondary prevention of SCD, by means of an ongoing registry involving seven Latin American countries and 770 patients.

Methods: Every individual within the present registry to date has presented with antecedents of aborted sudden death or cardiac arrest due to ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation.

Anticipated synchronization in coupled inertial ratchets with time-delayed feedback: a numerical study.

We investigate anticipated synchronization between two periodically driven deterministic, dissipative inertial ratchets that are able to exhibit directed transport with a finite velocity. The two ratchets interact through a unidirectional delay coupling, one is acting as a master system while the other one represents the slave system. Each of the two dissipative deterministic ratchets is driven externally by a common periodic force.

Microwave detection at 110 Ghz by nanowires with broken symmetry.

By using arrays of nanowires with intentionally broken symmetry, we were able to detect microwaves up to 110 GHz at room temperature. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest speed that has been demonstrated in different types of novel electronic nanostructures to date. Our experiments showed a rather stable detection sensitivity over a broad frequency range from 100 MHz to 110 GHz.

[Octreotide in the treatment of angiodysplasia in patients with advanced chronic renal failure].

Angiodysplasia is an important cause of gastrointestinal bleeding in patients with chronic renal failure. Octreotide, a long-acting synthetic somatostatin analogue that reduces splachnic blood flow have been used to treat esophageal varicose hemorrhage, but its efficacy for bleeding vascular ecstasies is awaiting support. We present three patients with chronic renal failure (two with diabetic nephropaty and the third with mesangiocapilar glomerulonephritis and hepatic cirrosis), seric creatinine 3-4,5 mg/dl, and recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding due to diffuse angiodysplasia and vascular ecstasies, diagnosed by oral endoscopy, colonoscopy and video capsule.

In bilaterians, the main regulator of muscle contraction is the troponin (Tpn) complex, comprising three closely interacting subunits (C, T, and I). To understand how evolutionary forces drive molecular change in protein complexes, we have compared the gene structures and expression patterns of Tpn genes in insects. In this class, while TpnC is encoded by multiple genes, TpnT and TpnI are encoded by single genes.

Plasmapheresis for the prophylaxis and treatment of recurrent focal segmental glomerulosclerosis following renal transplant.

We evaluated 10 patients with primary focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) treated with plasmapheresis (PS) following renal transplantation. Three patients lost their first graft due to FSGS recurrence. In seven patients, PS was indicated as treatment for probable recurrence defined as the onset of proteinuria above 1 g/24 hours.

Synaptic plasticity at neuronal connections has been well characterized functionally by using electrophysiological approaches, but the structural basis for this phenomenon remains controversial. We have studied the dynamic interactions between presynaptic and postsynaptic structures labeled with FM 4-64 and a membrane-targeted GFP, respectively, in hippocampal slices. Under conditions of reduced neuronal activity (1 muM tetrodotoxin), we observed extension of glutamate receptor-dependent processes from dendritic spines of CA1 pyramidal cells to presynaptic boutons.
