Principles of a novel methodology for the combined assessment of the immune function in sickly children with pathological changes in the organs of the otorhinolaringological system are expounded. The new approach includes investigations into local cellular and humoral immunity, evaluation of functional relationships and correlations between its parameters, interpretation of these findings, and the use of the characteristics thus obtained in the development of concrete recommendations for immunotropic and/or anti-inflammatory therapy. This approach is illustrated by examples of variations in the number of CD4(+) and CD20(+) cells and interplay between them.

28 samples of tissue from the middle ear obtained at removal of chemodectoma were studied histologically. Investigation of the tympanic cavity mucosa has shown correlation between the severity of fibroatrophic changes in the middle ear mucosa and duration of the disease. Pathomorphological alterations in the middle ear mucosa at early stages of chemodectoma (stage I and II) are similar to those in chronic lingering mucositis.

We studied the effects of regional lymphotropic immunostimulating therapy on alterations in immunoglobulins levels both in blood serum and paranasal sinuses mucosal secretion in patients with acute and chronic purulent sinusitis. Solutions of tactivin, lidase and novocain were administered into the area of the submaxillary lymph nodes. The effect was compared to that obtained after subcutaneous administration of tactivin and conventional therapy.
