We retrospectively analysed 16 patients who underwent surgical repair for vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) in our department from 1995 to 2012. A total of 14 patients (88%) were cured after the primary repair and two patients were cured by reoperation. We compared the characteristics of the patients whose VVF occurred early and late after surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • A clinical trial conducted from 2011-2013 evaluated the effectiveness of a single 2 g oral dose of azithromycin extended-release in treating urethritis in heterosexual males, showing a 90.9% eradication rate in patients with gonococcal urethritis.
  • The study found that Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains showed strong susceptibility to various antibiotics, with azithromycin having a lower susceptibility rate at 37.2%.
  • While the treatment was largely effective (90% eradication rate for nongonococcal urethritis), the main side effect was temporary diarrhea, and ongoing monitoring of antimicrobial resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Mycoplasma

We previously identified a human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-A24-restricted antigenic peptide, survivin-2B80-88, a member of the inhibitor of apoptosis protein family, recognized by CD8+cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL). In a phase I clinical trial of survivin-2B80-88 vaccination for metastatic urothelial cancer (MUC), we achieved clinical and immunological responses with safety. Moreover, our previous study indicated that interferon alpha (IFN α ) enhanced the effects of the vaccine for colorectal cancer.

A 56-year-old man who had a 28mm renal mass on computed tomography (CT) pointed out at another hospital visited our department. The tumor was buried and located in the renal hilus, which was slightly enhanced in the early phase and washed out in the delayed phase. We diagnosed it as papillary renal cell carcinoma and conducted partial nephrectomy.

We report a case of metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) treated with cytoreductive nephrectomy, cytokine therapy, and molecular targeted therapy followed by metastasectomy. A 47-year-old man was diagnosed as having bilateral RCC with metastases to the lung, liver, left adrenal gland, and lymph nodes in the mediastinum. He initially received right radical nephrectomy, left partial nephrectomy, and left adrenalectomy.

Xp11 translocation renal cell carcinoma is a rare disease diagnosed in children and adolescents in the advanced stage with an aggressive clinical course. Various gene fusions including the transcription factor E3 (TFE3) gene located on chromosome X cause the tumor. We established an Xp11 translocation renal cell carcinoma cell line from a renal tumor in a 18-y-old Japanese female and named it "S-TFE.

Background: The age-adjusted incidence rate of prostate cancer (PCa) has been reported to be lower among Asians than Western populations. A traditional Japanese meal, high in soybean products or isoflavones, may be associated with a decreased risk of PCa. Equol, which is converted from daidzein by human intestinal flora, is biologically more active than any other isoflavone aglycone.

Article Synopsis
  • Radical cystectomy (RC) is a common treatment for muscle-invasive bladder cancer, but it is associated with a high rate of complications, particularly postoperative infections. !* -
  • A study analyzed 126 patients who underwent RC, finding that various types of infections occurred in 66 of them, with anaerobic bacterial infections detected in a few cases. !* -
  • While the rate of anaerobic infections after RC is lower compared to colon surgeries, the findings suggest that these bacteria should still be considered potential culprits in postoperative infections. !*

Great advances in tissue androgen analysis using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) have made it possible to evaluate the tissue androgen content from a single needle prostate biopsy specimen. In this study, we investigated if pre-treatment androgen content in prostate biopsy specimens could predict their response to primary androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) and future castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). One-hundred and sixty-five prostate cancer patients who received primary ADT were enrolled.

A 60-year-old woman with interstitial cystitis (IC), who had previously received hydrodistention surgery, intravesical instillation of resiniferatoxin and medication, was being followed. Although urinary cytology was regularly tested with no positive findings, computed tomography carried out for screening of recurrent colon cancer showed muscle-invasive squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the bladder (cT3bN0M0). Cystectomy was performed, but she died due to rapid disease progression at 3 months postoperatively.

Unlabelled: WHAT'S KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT? AND WHAT DOES THE STUDY ADD?: Small, organ-confined renal cell carcinoma (RCC) generally has favourable pathological characteristics and a good prognosis. However, late recurrence is a known characteristic of the biological behaviour of RCC and no consensus has been established for surveillance protocols from 5 years after radical or partial nephrectomy. In the present study with long-term follow-up of patients with small RCCs, 18 of 172 patients (10.

Prostate cancer cells include a small population of cancer stem-like cells (CSCs)/cancer-initiating cells (CICs) that have roles in initiation and progression of the cancer. Recently, we isolated prostate CSCs/CICs as aldehyde dehydrogenase 1-highh (ALDH1(high) ) cells using the ALDEFLUOR assay; however, the molecular mechanisms of prostate CSCs/CICs are still elusive. Prostate CSCs/CICs were isolated as ALDH1(high) cells using the ALDEFLUOR assay, and the gene expression profiles were analyzed using a cDNA microarray and RT-PCR.
