Contemporary understanding of the mechanisms of disease increasingly points to examples of "genetic diseases" with an infectious component and of "infectious diseases" with a genetic component. Such blurred boundaries generate ethical, legal, and social issues and highlight historical contexts that must be examined when incorporating host genomic information into the prevention, outbreak control, and treatment of infectious diseases.

Routine childhood vaccination is a crucial component of public health in Canada and worldwide. To facilitate catch-up from the global decline in routine vaccination caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and toward the ongoing pursuit of coverage goals, vaccination programs must understand barriers to vaccine access imposed or exacerbated by the pandemic. We conducted a regionally representative online survey in January 2023 including 2036 Canadian parents with children under the age of 18.

Article Synopsis
  • Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a common sexually transmitted infection that can lead to various outcomes, from benign lesions to invasive cancers, particularly affecting the cervix and head and neck regions.
  • The way HPV affects individuals varies greatly, influenced by the virus's ability to stay hidden and dodge the host's immune response, with the oral mucosa being a key area of infection.
  • The review emphasizes the need for awareness about the potential for malignant transformation in HPV-related lesions, highlighting the importance of prevention and early detection in improving outcomes for those affected.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute respiratory tract infections (ARI) are prevalent and lead to serious health issues, particularly in vulnerable populations like the elderly and immunocompromised individuals.
  • A study analyzed 3,578 nasopharyngeal swabs and found that 930 samples tested positive for respiratory viruses, with notable variations in viral infections across different age groups.
  • The research highlights the importance of understanding the epidemiology of respiratory viruses, the prevalence of co-infections, and the need for rapid diagnostic tests in clinical settings to improve treatment outcomes and decrease hospitalizations.

Aim: For a few years, teledentistry has been an emerging innovative strategy with potential in the field of paediatric dentistry. There are still few studies in this regard, so further research is needed to verify and ensure that teledentistry is not only an accessible mode of communication, but above all effective and evidence-based. This study aimed to use a preliminary telematic approach to promote the compliance of patients in the developmental age during the first dental visit.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on improving the time-to-treatment initiation (TTI) for patients undergoing external beam radiotherapy through a standardized workflow.
  • Data from 2012-2019 showed a significant decrease in TTI across various treatment techniques (3D, IMRT, SBRT) after standardizing procedures.
  • The consistent monitoring of TTI helped maintain shorter treatment times over the years, enhancing the overall efficiency of the radiation oncology department.

The histo-blood group antigens P, P1 and Pk are a closely related set of glycosphingolipid structures expressed by red blood cells and other tissues. None of these three characters is expressed on p cells, a null phenotype that arises in the context of homozygous mutation of the A4GALT gene. Subjects with p phenotype spontaneously develop a natural alloantibody named anti-PP1Pk, which is a mixture of IgG and IgM against P1, P and Pk.

A unique case of severe measles complicated by multiple features of gas accumulation is described, on the ground of the available literature evidences. Complications from measles have been reported in every organ system and they may vary by age and underlying conditions. Pneumomediastinum is usually associated with subcutaneous emphysema and pneumopericardium, but rarely associated with pneumothorax.

Two recent cases of extremely severe thrombocytopenic purpura related to a concomitant cytomegalovirus infection, either associated or not with an underlying immunosuppression, draw our attention on this intriguing pathologic association, on the ground of an updated literature review.

The dysregulated immune response occurring upon COVID-19 infection can lead to tissue damage and organ failure. Different therapeutic strategies are needed to cope with the current and future outspread of COVID-19, including antiviral and anti-inflammatory agents. We describe the outcome of hospitalized patients treated with canakinumab and remdesivir plus the standard of care therapy.

Both the safety and effectiveness of intrathecal tigecycline (TGC) for treatment of infections of the central nervous system (CNS) are discussed using the clinical findings from a study of a recent patient who came to our attention, along with a literature review. Although penetration into the CNS is low (approximately 11%), intraventricular TGC could help treat patients with severe post- neurosurgical CNS infections. The use of multiple routes of TGC administration appears to be encouraging and should be considered in managing life-threatening intraventricular infections.

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a potentially life-threatening, rare acute thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA), caused by a severe ADAMTS13 deficiency. As the COVID-19 pandemic rapidly spread around the globe, much data about the pathogenicity of this virus were published. Soon after the detection of the first cases of COVID-19, it was clear that there was a wide range of COVID coagulopathy manifestations, such as deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary thromboembolism, and thrombotic microangiopathies.

A unique report of Schönlein-Henoch purpura (SHP) associated with a recent Giardia lamblia enteric infection is described and discussed on the ground of the available literature. Tinidazole plus an appropriate probiotic therapy, including Lactobacillus reuteri and vitamin D, proved to be effective in the condition. SHP is an immunocomplex-mediated disorder characterised by a number of differently associated signs and symptoms, leading to the possible involvement of the skin, joints, abdomen and kidneys.

Anecdotal evidence indicates that people believe that morality is declining. In a series of studies using both archival and original data (n = 12,492,983), we show that people in at least 60 nations around the world believe that morality is declining, that they have believed this for at least 70 years and that they attribute this decline both to the decreasing morality of individuals as they age and to the decreasing morality of successive generations. Next, we show that people's reports of the morality of their contemporaries have not declined over time, suggesting that the perception of moral decline is an illusion.

Article Synopsis
  • The case involves a rare and severe instance of rickettsiosis, an infection caused by the bacteria Rickettsia conorii.
  • This particular case is complicated by brain involvement, indicating more severe symptoms than typical rickettsiosis infections.
  • Additionally, the presence of anti-phospholipid antibodies suggests a possible link between the infection and autoimmune responses, which is supported by recent research.

Glecaprevir (GLE)/pibrentasvir (PIB) is a pangenotypic direct-acting antiviral regimen approved for treating chronic hepatitis C virus. Primary treatment and re-treatment with GLE/PIB are effective and safe for patients without decompensated liver cirrhosis and chronic hepatitis C in a real-world clinical setting. However, in the context of compensated cirrhosis and concomitant administration of inhibitors of cytochromes, a careful monitoring of liver biomarkers, as well as therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM), may be advisable during GLE/PIB therapy.

Comorbidities in people living with HIV (PLWH) represent a major clinical challenge today, and metabolic syndrome (MTBS) is one of the most important. Our objective was to assess the prevalence of MTBS and the role of both clinical/socio-behavioral risk factors for MTBS in a cohort of PLWH. All PLWH, over 18 years of age, attending all Infectious Disease Units in Calabria Region (Southern Italy) for their routine checks from October 2019-January 2020 were enrolled.

Purpose/objectives: To report our 7-year experience with a daily monitoring system to significantly reduce couch position overrides and errors in patient treatment positioning.

Materials And Methods: Treatment couch position override data were extracted from a radiation oncology-specific electronic medical record system from 2012 to 2018. During this period, we took several actions to reduce couch position overrides, including reducing the number of tolerance tables from 18 to 6, tightening tolerance limits, enforcing time outs, documenting reasons for overrides, and timely reviewing of overrides made from previous treatment day.
