Here, we hypothesize that growth factor-induced differentiation of MSC can be increased by chemically oversulfated marine polysaccharides.

PDZ domains recognise short sequence motifs at the extreme C-termini of proteins. A model based on microarray data has been recently published for predicting the binding preferences of PDZ domains to five residue long C-terminal sequences. Here we investigated the potential of this predictor for discovering novel protein interactions that involve PDZ domains.

Proteasomal degradation of p53 by human papillomavirus E6 oncoprotein relies on the structural integrity of p53 core domain.

The E6 oncoprotein produced by high-risk mucosal HPV stimulates ubiquitinylation and proteasome-dependent degradation of the tumour suppressor p53 via formation of a trimeric complex comprising E6, p53, and E6-AP. p53 is also degraded by its main cellular regulator MDM2. The main binding site of p53 to MDM2 is situated in the natively unfolded N-terminal region of p53.

The steady-state absorption and fluorescence, as well as the time-resolved fluorescence properties of dimethoxycurcumin and bis-dehydroxycurcumin dissolved in several solvents differing in polarity and H-bonding capability are presented. Characterization of the age-dependent intervertebral disc changes in rabbit by correlation between MRI, histology and gene expression.

Background: The present study was conducted to address whether the intervertebral disc of rabbit could be considered (i) as a valuable model to provide new insights into the tissue and cellular changes of Nucleus pulposus aging and (ii) as an appropriate tool to investigate the efficacy of Nucleus pulposus cell-based biotherapies.

Methods: Lumbar intervertebral disc from rabbits with increasing ages (1, 6 and 30 month-old) were compared by MRI and histological observation using Pfirrmann's grading and Boos' scoring respectively. This study reports on the relationship between copper (Cu) behavior and organic matter (OM) transformation along the turbidity gradient in the freshwater reaches of the Gironde Estuary. During a one-year survey, surface water and suspended particulate matter (SPM) were sampled at least monthly at three sites along the Garonne Branch, representing the main fluvial branch of the Gironde Estuary. Additionally, a longitudinal high resolution profile was sampled along the Garonne Branch, covering the turbidity gradient from the river water endmember to the maximum turbidity zone (MTZ).

On the nature of hand-action representations evoked during written sentence comprehension.

We examine the nature of motor representations evoked during comprehension of written sentences describing hand actions. We distinguish between two kinds of hand actions: a functional action, applied when using the object for its intended purpose, and a volumetric action, applied when picking up or holding the object. In Experiment 1, initial activation of both action representations was followed by selection of the functional action, regardless of sentence context.

Pathologic role of stressed-induced glucocorticoids in drug-induced liver injury in mice.

In the current study, we provide evidence that endogenous GC play a pathologic role in AILI. Specifically, pretreatment of mice with the GC receptor (GCR) inhibitor, RU486 (mifepristrone), protected normal but not adrenalectomized mice from AILI, while pretreatment with dexamethasone, a synthetic GC, exacerbated AILI.

Physical stability assessment and sensory optimization of a dairy-free emulsion using response surface methodology.

Desserts made with soy cream, which are oil-in-water emulsions, are widely consumed by lactose-intolerant individuals in Brazil. In this regard, this study aimed at using response surface methodology (RSM) to optimize the sensory attributes of a soy-based emulsion over a range of pink guava juice (GJ: 22% to 32%) and soy protein (SP: 1% to 3%). Fungi are well known for their ability to excrete enzymes into the environment. The aim of this work was to evaluate xylanase production by fungi isolated from soil. One hundred and thirty-six fungal isolates were screened for xylanase production.

Grasping beer mugs: on the dynamics of alignment effects induced by handled objects.

We examined automatic spatial alignment effects evoked by handled objects. Using color as the relevant cue carried by an irrelevant handled object aligned or misaligned with the response hand, responses to color were faster when the handle aligned with the response hand. Alignment effects were observed only when the task was to make a reach and grasp response.

The role of cytokines in the mechanism of adverse drug reactions.

Cytokines are thought to play a role in acute and/or immune-mediated adverse drug reactions (ADRs) due to their ability to regulate the innate and adaptive immune systems. This role is highly complex owing to the pluripotent nature of cytokines, which enables the same cytokine to play multiple roles depending on target organ(s) involved. As a result, the discussion of cytokine involvement in ADRs is organized according to target organ(s); specifically, ADRs targeting skin and liver, as well as ADRs targeting multiple organs, such as drug-induced autoimmunity and infusion-related reactions.
