In mode-division multiplexed (MDM) transmission systems, mode coupling is responsible for inter-modal crosstalk. We consider the transmission of modulated signals over a few-mode fiber (FMF) having low mode coupling and large differential mode group delay in the presence of a non-ideal fiber connection responsible for extra mode coupling. In this context, we first analytically derive the coupling matrix of the multimode connector and we numerically study the dependence of the matrix coefficients as a function of the butt-joint connection characteristics.

Article Synopsis
  • A new optical transmission system is introduced that successfully shows mode division multiplexing capabilities.
  • The system features a mode multiplexer and demultiplexer using a programmable liquid crystal panel, along with a prototype few-mode fiber and advanced processing algorithms.
  • Two data streams, each at 100 Gb/s, were transmitted and after covering 40 km, the received signal quality was found to be adequate for error correction.

We experimentally study, over a dispersion-managed link relying on low chromatic dispersion fibre, the origins of the system benefits provided by temporally interleaving the polarization tributaries of 100Gb/s coherent RZ-PDM-QPSK by half a symbol period. Hence, we demonstrate that the amount of benefits provided by this technique is dependent on the configuration of the WDM transmission system.
