We cannot repeat history again: a call to action to centre indigenous leadership as we prepare for the next pandemic.

Indigenous communities worldwide continue to disproportionately bear the burden during pandemics due to ongoing health inequities and systemic exclusion from pandemic decision-making processes. As the global community prepares for the next pandemic, it is critical to prioritise Indigenous leadership and governance within public health responses. This commentary highlights successful models of Indigenous-led pandemic responses during COVID-19 in Canada and Australia.

This study characterized vertebral compression fractures in patients with and without a prior diagnosis of COVID-19. : Using a nationwide claims database, this retrospective study used ICD-10 billing codes to identify patients with a diagnosis of vertebral compression fracture from January 2020 to April 2022.

Risk of Chondral Fracture During Implantation of Distal Femur Osteochondral Autograft Plugs: A Human Cadaveric Comparison of Four Different Donor Regions.

Introduction: Distal femoral cartilage lesions can be treated using osteochondral autograft transfer (OAT). When impacting plugs into a recipient site, the cartilage may fracture. This study aimed to analyze OAT donor regions and impaction energies to identify characteristics that lead to fracture.

A participatory method to develop human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine short video content for rural New York parents.

Purpose: Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine uptake is lower in rural areas, particularly for boys. The purpose of the study was to demonstrate how a participatory approach to developing a series of videos about the HPV vaccine better meets the informational needs of rural parents.

Methods: We recruited six rural parents to participate on a parent advisory board (PAB).

Background: Weight stigma is a fundamental cause of health inequality. Body positivity may be a counterbalance to weight stigma. Social media is replete with weight-stigmatizing content and is a driver of poor mental health outcomes; however, there remains a gap in understanding its potential to mitigate the prevalence and impact of harmful messaging and to promote positive effects on a large scale.

The hydroxycarboxylic acid receptor HCA2 is required for the protective effect of ketogenic diet in epilepsy.

One third of epilepsy patients are resistant to treatment with current anti-seizure medications. The ketogenic diet is used to treat some forms of refractory epilepsy, but the mechanism of its action has not yet been elucidated. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether the hydroxycarboxylic acid receptor 2 (HCA2), a known immunomodulatory receptor, plays a role in mediating the protective effect of this diet.

Suture Tying Force for Cut-Out during Radial Meniscus Tear Repair: A Biomechanical Evaluation of Failure Loads during the Knot-Tying Process.

Objective: The purpose of the study was to determine average tensile forces resulting in suture failure while tying a knot during repair of complete radial meniscus tears and to compare the failure tensile force based on meniscus tissue location: the peripheral (red-red) versus inner (white-white).

Design: This study was designed as a cadaveric biomechanical study using 24 menisci harvested from fresh frozen cadaveric knees with midbody radial tears. Tears were repaired using 2-0 nonabsorbable suture in both the inner meniscus and the peripheral meniscus.

Polylactic acid bioabsorbable implants of the hand: A review.

In the treatment of hand fractures, metal implants are often used to allow early range of motion and a stable fixation. Although they provide adequate bone union, metal implants have been known to cause joint stiffness, painful or prominent hardware, and adhesions, often leading to another surgery for hardware removal. Bioabsorbable implants have been shown to offer comparable results for fracture fixation in the hand while removing the complications seen with retained hardware.

The Joystick Method: A Mini Open Technique for Repairing Patellar Osteochondral Fractures With Concomitant Medial Patellofemoral Ligament Reconstruction.

Fixation of osteochondral fractures after patellar dislocation is typically done using an open approach due to the location of the defect. This is traditionally performed through a medial parapatellar arthrotomy to allow adequate visualization. By using the joystick method, adequate visualization is achieved with a smaller arthrotomy.

Biomechanical Comparison of All-Suture, All-Inside Meniscus Repair Devices in a Human Cadaveric Meniscus Model.

Objective: Newer all-suture, all-inside meniscus repair devices utilize soft suture anchors. The purpose of this study was to compare the biomechanical performance of 4 meniscus repair devices in human cadaver menisci: the JuggerStitch (all-suture, all-inside), the FiberStitch (all-suture, all-inside), a polyether ether ketone (PEEK) all-inside, and an inside-out device.

Design: Forty human cadaver menisci were tested after creating 20 mm longitudinal tears in the posterior meniscus.

Background: The One Health framework is intended to optimise the interdependent health of humans, animals and ecosystems. It relies on effective collaborations across disciplines, sectors and communities. One Health networks have become increasingly important platforms for encouraging, creating and supporting collaborations.

Social Media, Public Health Research, and Vulnerability: Considerations to Advance Ethical Guidelines and Strengthen Future Research.

The purpose of this article is to build upon prior work in social media research and ethics by highlighting an important and as yet underdeveloped research consideration: how should we consider vulnerability when conducting public health research in the social media environment? The use of social media in public health, both platforms and their data, has advanced the field dramatically over the past 2 decades. Applied public health research in the social media space has led to more robust surveillance tools and analytic strategies, more targeted recruitment activities, and more tailored health education. Ethical guidelines when using social media for public health research must also expand alongside these increasing capabilities and uses.

Arthroscopic Simulation-Based Training of Orthopaedic Surgery Residents: Past, Present, and Future.

Simulation-based training is required by many medical specialties. Barriers, however, have prevented widespread implementation of simulators for arthroscopic training. The advantages of arthroscopic simulator-based training of residents include decreased errors, decreased cost of training, and improved patient care.

Background: Amid a movement toward value-based healthcare, increasing emphasis has been placed on outcomes and cost of medical services. To define and demonstrate the quality of services provided by Mohs surgeons, it is important to identify and understand the key aspects of Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) that contribute to excellence in patient care.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to develop and identify a comprehensive list of metrics in an initial effort to define excellence in MMS.

CropLife Europe Crop Development Database: An open-source, pan-European, harmonized crop development database for use in regulatory pesticide exposure modeling and risk assessment.

There is a regulatory need for crop development dates to assess current default values used within chemical exposure assessments as well as to justify refinements within risk assessments. However, a readily available pan-European crop phenology database covering key FOrum for the Co-ordination of pesticide fate models and their USe (FOCUS) crops and scenarios to meet this need is not currently available. Therefore, we describe the development of a harmonized, pan-European, CropLife Europe Crop Development Database (C2D2), that is fully aligned with this regulatory requirement utilizing efficacy trials data generated for regulatory submissions when registering plant protection products under Regulation (EU)1107/2009.

Having a real say: findings from first nations community panels on pandemic influenza vaccine distribution.

Background: Recent deliberations by Australian public health researchers and practitioners produced an ethical framework of how decisions should be made to distribute pandemic influenza vaccine. The outcome of the deliberations was that the population should be considered in two categories, Level 1 and Level 2, with Level 1 groups being offered access to the pandemic influenza vaccine before other groups. However, the public health researchers and practitioners recognised the importance of making space for public opinion and sought to understand citizens values and preferences, especially First Nations peoples.

Importance: Perineural invasion (PNI) is an adverse risk feature in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC) that affects patient prognosis and disease management. However, research comparing different PNI patterns on patient outcomes is limited.

Objective: To compare 4 assessments of PNI in CSCC, their associations with poor outcomes, and implications for their inclusion in the Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) staging system.

Evaluation of Lateral Femur Condyle Free Chondral Fragment Swelling after Soaking in Normal Saline.

Objective: After traumatic knee injuries, chondral fragments can avulse off bone with the progeny fragment becoming a loose body. The loose fragment may be larger than expected when trying to surgically repair the fragment back to its original site. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a loose chondral fragment from the lateral femur condyle would increase in size and weight after soaking in normal saline (NS) for 14 days.

Characterizing Twitter chatter about temporary alcohol abstinence during "Dry January".

With roots as a public health campaign in the United Kingdom, "Dry January" is a temporary alcohol abstinence initiative encouraging participants to abstain from alcohol use during the month of January. Dry January has become a cultural phenomenon, gaining increasing news media attention and social media engagement. Given the utility of capturing naturalistic discussions around health topics on social media, we examined Twitter chatter about Dry January and associated temporary abstinence experiences.
