Evaluating a Novel Disability Education and Awareness Event for Health Professions Trainees.

Background: People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are at high risk for unmet health care needs and face barriers to equitable care, yet few health professions students receive adequate training to meet these needs.

Objectives: An interactive panel discussion with Special Olympics Pennsylvania (SOPA) athletes and staff was planned and implemented so that health professions students/trainees would gain knowledge of IDD, health barriers, SOPA resources, and volunteer opportunities.

Methods: Panelists included two SOPA athletes and their mentors; questions solicited responses about personal health care experiences (Fall 2019).

In recent years, we have witnessed the emergence of the implementation and integration of significant working solutions in transportation, especially within the smart city concept. A lot of cities in Europe and around the world support this initiative of making their cities smarter for enhanced mobility and a sustainable environment. In this paper, we present a case study of Tartu city, where we developed and designed a daily real-time system for extracting and performing a modal split analysis.

Here, we test a link between whole-brain theories of semantics and the role of the left inferior frontal gyrus (LIFG) in controlled language performance using network control theory (NCT), a branch of systems engineering. Specifically, we examined whether two properties of node controllability, boundary and modal controllability, were linked to semantic selection and retrieval on sentence completion and verb generation tasks.

Improving prediction of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy: From SUDEP-7 to SUDEP-3.

Objective: Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is a significant cause of mortality in epilepsy. The aim of this study is to evaluate the validity of the SUDEP-7 inventory and its components as tools for predicting SUDEP risk, and to develop and validate an improved inventory.

Methods: The study included 28 patients who underwent video-electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring and later died of SUDEP, and 56 age- and sex-matched control patients with epilepsy.

The high efficiency of C photosynthesis relies on spatial division of labor, classically with initial carbon fixation in the mesophyll and carbon reduction in the bundle sheath. By employing grinding and serial filtration over liquid nitrogen, we enriched C tissues along a developing leaf gradient. This method treats both C tissues in an integrity-preserving and consistent manner, while allowing complementary measurements of metabolite abundance and enzyme activity, thus providing a comprehensive data set.

Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) has recently been shown to be a valuable tool for cultural heritage studies, especially when used in conjunction with established analytical techniques in the field. The ability of ToF-SIMS to simultaneously image inorganic and organic species within a paint cross section at micrometer-level spatial resolution makes it a uniquely qualified analytical technique to aid in further understanding the processes of pigment and binder alteration, as well as pigment-binder interactions. In this study, ToF-SIMS was used to detect and image both molecular and elemental species related to CdS pigment and binding medium alteration on the painting (1905-1906, The Barnes Foundation) by Henri Matisse.

Comparative transcriptome atlases reveal altered gene expression modules between two Cleomaceae C3 and C4 plant species.

C(4) photosynthesis outperforms the ancestral C(3) state in a wide range of natural and agro-ecosystems by affording higher water-use and nitrogen-use efficiencies. It therefore represents a prime target for engineering novel, high-yielding crops by introducing the trait into C(3) backgrounds. However, the genetic architecture of C(4) photosynthesis remains largely unknown.

SR-FTIR imaging of the altered cadmium sulfide yellow paints in Henri Matisse's Le Bonheur de vivre (1905-6)--examination of visually distinct degradation regions.

SR-FTIR imaging has been used to map the mid-IR active photo-degradation phases in two thin sections of cadmium yellow paint removed from Henri Matisse's Le Bonheur de vivre (1905-1906, The Barnes Foundation). These samples represent both the darkened cadmium yellow foliage in the upper left of the work and the lightened cadmium yellow field beneath the central reclining figures. The altered cadmium yellow paints from both regions were found to contain cadmium carbonate (CdCO3), cadmium sulphate (CdSO4), and cadmium oxalate (CdC2O4).

C(4) photosynthesis involves alterations to the biochemistry, cell biology, and development of leaves. Together, these modifications increase the efficiency of photosynthesis, and despite the apparent complexity of the pathway, it has evolved at least 45 times independently within the angiosperms. To provide insight into the extent to which gene expression is altered between C(3) and C(4) leaves, and to identify candidates associated with the C(4) pathway, we used massively parallel mRNA sequencing of closely related C(3) (Cleome spinosa) and C(4) (Cleome gynandra) species.

MCP-1 chemokine receptor CCR2 is decreased on circulating monocytes in sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (sALS).

Recent studies suggest that monocyte activation may play a role in ALS pathogenesis. Therefore, monocyte CCR2, the receptor for monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), and plasma levels of MCP-1 were measured in 42 sALS patients, 38 healthy and 34 age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) controls. MCP-1 was elevated in both sALS and ARMD patients, but CCR2 levels were significantly decreased on sALS but not on ARMD monocytes.

Blood from 38 patients with sALS, 28 aged-match controls, and 25 Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients were evaluated and activated monocyte/macrophages were observed in all patients with sALS and AD; the degree of activation was directly related to the rate of sALS disease progression. Other parameters of T-cell activation and immune globulin levels showed similar disease associated changes.

Placebo-controlled phase I/II studies of minocycline in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Two double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled feasibility trials of minocycline in ALS were conducted. In Trial 1, 19 subjects received 200 mg/day or placebo for 6 months; there were no significant differences in adverse events (AE). In Trial 2, 23 subjects received up to 400 mg/day in an 8-month crossover trial.
