Background: The purpose of this prospective matched paired study is to compare the in vivo migration patterns using Ein Bild Roentgen Analyze femoral component of shortened vs standard-length stems cemented line-to-line in primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) at 2-year follow-up.

Methods: We prospectively included the first 50 consecutive primary cemented THAs in 50 patients using a 12% shortened stem (AmisK group) of which design was derived from the original Charnley-Kerboull (CK) femoral components. These 50 patients were matched paired to 50 patients from a historical series of patients who underwent primary THAs using standard-length CK stems (CK group) with available long-term results, including Ein Bild Roentgen Analyze femoral component data at 2-year follow-up.

Case: A 27-year-old immunocompromised man with Crohn disease presented with bilateral septic hip arthritis due to Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi. The diagnosis was confirmed by synovial membrane and effusion culture specimens that were obtained during arthroscopic debridement of both hips.

Conclusion: Prolonged antimicrobial therapy, bilateral femoral head resection, and placement of cement spacers for 5 months, followed by bilateral total hip arthroplasty, was a radical and effective treatment for a patient with Crohn disease and bilateral Salmonella septic arthritis of the hip.

Molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) may not selectively recognize small template of limited number of functional groups, such as 2-chlorophenol (2-CP). In this work, a novel method was proposed to improve the recognition ability of the molecularly imprinted solid phase extraction (MISPE) of 2-CP from environmental waters. This was achieved by derivatization of 2-CP with 4-amino-anti-pyrine (4-AAP) to enlarge its molecular size and add more binding sites.

The femoral preparation included removal of diaphyseal cancellous bone to obtain primary rotational stability of the stem before line-to-line cementing. Idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) is associated with lower levels of the pulmonary vasodilator nitric oxide (NO) and its biochemical reaction products (nitrite [NO(2) (-)], nitrate [NO(3) (-)]), in part, due to the reduction in pulmonary endothelial NO synthesis. However, NO levels are also determined by consumptive reactions, such as with superoxide to form peroxynitrite, which subsequently may generate stable products of nitrotyrosine (Tyr-NO(2)) and/or NO(3) (-). In this context, superoxide dismutase (SOD) preserves NO in vivo by scavenging superoxide and preventing the consumptive reactions.

We carried out a prospective randomised study designed to compare the penetration rate of acetabular polyethylene inserts of identical design but different levels of cross-linking at a minimum of four years follow-up. A total of 102 patients (102 hips) were randomised to receive either highly cross-linked Durasul, or contemporary Sulene polyethylene inserts at total hip replacement. A single blinded observer used the Martell system to assess penetration of the femoral head.

Idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) is characterized by plexiform vascular lesions, which are hypothesized to arise from deregulated growth of pulmonary artery endothelial cells (PAEC). Here, functional and molecular differences among PAEC derived from IPAH and control human lungs were evaluated. Compared with control cells, IPAH PAEC had greater cell numbers in response to growth factors in culture due to increased proliferation as determined by bromodeoxyuridine incorporation and Ki67 nuclear antigen expression and decreased apoptosis as determined by caspase-3 activation and TdT-mediated dUTP nick end labeling assay.

Idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) is pathogenetically related to low levels of the vasodilator nitric oxide (NO). Because NO regulates cellular respiration and mitochondrial biogenesis, we hypothesized that abnormalities of bioenergetics may be present in IPAH. Evaluation of pulmonary artery endothelial cells from IPAH and control lungs in vitro revealed that oxygen consumption of IPAH cells was decreased, especially in state 3 respiration with substrates glutamate-malate or succinate, and this decrease paralleled reduction in Complex IV activity and IPAH cellular NO synthesis.

The lacrimal drainage system drains fluid that exists normally on the surface of the eye into the nasal cavity. This paper describes a hand-held, personal-computer-based instrument to quantitatively estimate the resistance to fluid flow through the lacrimal drainage system. This resistance measurement is proposed as a possible means to diagnose blockage of the system and to verify the degree of change in resistance after clinical treatment.
