Purpose: Early detection of breast cancer has a significant effect on reducing its mortality rate. For this purpose, automated three-dimensional breast ultrasound (3-D ABUS) has been recently used alongside mammography. The 3-D volume produced in this imaging system includes many slices.

Article Synopsis
  • Breast cancer is a major cause of death among women, and finding it early is really important for treatment.
  • This study looked at tiny molecules in the blood called microRNAs to see if they can help detect breast cancer more accurately.
  • The researchers found a group of 5 specific microRNAs that could help identify early stages of breast cancer and also tell it apart from non-cancerous conditions.

Automated 3D breast ultrasound (ABUS) is a new popular modality as an adjunct to mammography for detecting cancers in women with dense breasts. In this paper, a multi-stage computer aided detection system is proposed to detect cancers in ABUS images. In the first step, an efficient despeckling method called OBNLM is applied on the images to reduce speckle noise.
