Article Synopsis
  • Blood culture-negative endocarditis (BCNE) poses diagnosis challenges due to delays impacting patient outcomes.
  • A study in Tehran examined 50 BCNE patients, testing their sera for antibodies and heart valves for specific Bartonella DNA using real-time PCR.
  • Results revealed one patient with B. quintana detected, highlighting the potential role of Bartonella in BCNE and suggesting further research on animal reservoirs and at-risk groups.

Carbapenem-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) outbreak in intensive care units (ICUs) is a significant problem for healthcare facilities. In this study, we aimed to investigate the occurrence of CRAB isolates among ICU-admitted patients during the three waves of the COVID-19 pandemic in Iran using Multiple-Locus Variable Number Tandem-Repeat Analysis (MLVA). We obtained 50 (A) baumannii isolates from tracheal aspirate and blood culture samples.

Article Synopsis
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa is often found co-infecting COVID-19 patients, prompting a study on its antimicrobial resistance and genetic typing among 15 isolates from ICU patients at Sina Hospital in Iran.
  • The study utilized various methods to determine resistance patterns, revealing high resistance rates to antibiotics like imipenem (93.3%) and significant biofilm formation in all isolates.
  • Genetic analysis showed multiple drug resistance in 66.6% of isolates and identified various resistance genes, while multilocus variable-number tandem-repeat analysis revealed 11 different types and 7 main clusters among the isolates.

Background: The global emergence of Acinetobacter baumannii resistance to most conventional antibiotics presents a major therapeutic challenge and necessitates the discovery of new antibacterial agents. The purpose of this study was to investigate in vitro and in vivo anti-biofilm potency of dermcidin-1L (DCD-1L) against extensively drug-resistant (XDR)-, pandrug-resistant (PDR)-, and ATCC19606-A. baumannii.

Background: Although so far several studies have determined the hepatitis E virus (HEV) prevalence in some parts of Iran, no data exists regarding the HEV seroprevalence in Bushehr province as the southernmost point in Iran yet.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the seroprevalence of anti-HEV IgG among the blood donors in Bushehr.

Patients And Methods: A total of 628 blood donor samples were collected from September to October 2013, after obtaining informed written consents, and analyzed for the presence of anti-HEV IgG using commercial HEV enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit.
