Article Synopsis
  • Kidney transplant maintenance therapy usually includes calcineurin inhibitors like tacrolimus or cyclosporine, often paired with mycophenolate or mTOR inhibitors, and sometimes corticosteroids.
  • A study from Italy analyzed the risk and benefits of various immunosuppressive regimens in kidney transplant patients between 2009 and 2019, focusing on the safety and effectiveness of tacrolimus versus cyclosporine and comparing mTORi with mycophenolate.
  • Results indicated that tacrolimus therapy had lower risks of graft rejection and severe infections than cyclosporine, despite a higher incidence of diabetes; mTORi showed similar efficacy to mycophenolate, suggesting it could be a viable alternative.

The Lagoon of Venice is often dredged for channel maintenance. To avoid harmful consequences to the ecosystem, a proper disposal of bottom sediments requires a preliminary evaluation of its potential toxicity before excavation. Here we evaluated the effects of polluted sediments on clams (Ruditapes philippinarum) using a multibiomarker approach.

Immigrants from outside Europe have increased over the past two decades, especially in Southern European countries including Italy. This influx coincided with an increased number of immigrants with end-stage organ diseases. In this narrative review, we reviewed evidence of the gaps between native-born and immigrant populations in the Organ Donation and Transplantation (ODT) process in Italy.

Background: In immunosuppression after transplantation, several multi-drug approaches are used, involving calcineurin inhibitors (), antimetabolites (), mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitors (), and corticosteroids. However, data on immunosuppressive therapy by organ and its space-time variability are lacking.

Methods: An Italian multicentre observational cohort study was conducted using health information systems.

The goal of post-transplant immunosuppressive drug therapy is to prevent organ rejection while minimizing drug toxicities. In clinical practice, a multidrug approach is commonly used and involves drugs with different mechanisms of action, including calcineurin inhibitors (CNI) (tacrolimus or cyclosporine), antimetabolite (antimet) (mycophenolate or azathioprine), inhibitors of mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) (sirolimus or everolimus), and/or steroids. Although evidence based on several randomized clinical trials is available, the optimal immunosuppressive therapy has not been established and may vary among organ transplant settings.

Amyl salicylate (AS) is a fragrance massively used as a personal care product and following the discharged in wastewaters may end up in the aquatic environment representing a potential threat for the ecosystem and living organisms. AS was recently detected in water of the Venice Lagoon, a vulnerable area continuously subjected to the income of anthropogenic chemicals. The lagoon is a relevant area for mollusc farming, including the Mediterranean mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) having an important economic and ecological role.

C6O4 (difluoro{[2,2,4,5-tetrafluoro-5-(trifluoromethoxy)-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl]oxy}acetic acid) is a new surfactant and emulsifier used as a substitute of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Recently, C6O4 has been detected in aquatic environments, but, at present, no information concerning the effects of C6O4 on aquatic species, such as bivalves, are available in the literature. Therefore, in this study we evaluated for the first time the effects of C6O4 (0.

There is growing concern for the wide use ofperfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) because of its toxic effects on the environment and on human health. A new compound - the so called C6O4 (perfluoro ([5-methoxy-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl]oxy) acetic acid) - was recently introduced as one of the alternative to traditional PFOA, however this was done without any scientific evidence of the effects of C6O4 when dispersed into the environment. Recently, the Regional Agency for the Protection of the Environment of Veneto (Italy) detected high levels of C6O4 in groundwater and in the Po river, increasing the alarm for the potential effects of this chemical into the natural environment.

Article Synopsis
  • Pedophilia is a complex disorder linked to child sexual offenses, with research showing mixed results on brain abnormalities connected to this behavior.
  • This study conducted a meta-analysis of previous research to examine the neural aspects of pedophilia, revealing that acquired forms of the disorder are associated with specific brain regions important for self-control and social understanding.
  • The findings indicate that idiopathic (original causes) and acquired pedophilia may represent distinct conditions, which could help in developing better treatment approaches for affected individuals.
