Exploring the Association Linking Head Position and Sleep Architecture to Motor Impairment in Parkinson's Disease: An Exploratory Study.

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) tend to sleep more frequently in the supine position and less often change head and body position during sleep. Besides sleep quality and continuity, head and body positions are crucial for glymphatic system (GS) activity. This pilot study evaluated sleep architecture and head position during each sleep stage in idiopathic PD patients without cognitive impairment, correlating sleep data to patients' motor and non-motor symptoms (NMS).

Cerebrospinal-fluid biomarkers for predicting phenoconversion in patients with isolated rapid-eye movement sleep behavior disorder.

Study Objectives: Patients with isolated rapid-eye-movement sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) have an increased risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases. This study assessed cerebrospinal-fluid (CSF) biomarkers of neurodegeneration and blood-brain barrier (BBB) alteration in patients with iRBD compared to controls and ascertain whether these biomarkers may predict phenoconversion to alpha-synucleinopathies (Parkinson's Disease (PD), Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), Multiple System Atrophy (MSA)).

Methods: Patients and controls underwent between 2012 and 2016 a neurological assessment, a lumbar puncture for CSF biomarker analysis (β-amyloid42 - Aβ42; total-tau, and phosphorylated tau), and BBB alteration (CSF/serum albumin ratio).

Optimizing non-pharmaceutical intervention strategies against COVID-19 using artificial intelligence.

One key task in the early fight against the COVID-19 pandemic was to plan non-pharmaceutical interventions to reduce the spread of the infection while limiting the burden on the society and economy. With more data on the pandemic being generated, it became possible to model both the infection trends and intervention costs, transforming the creation of an intervention plan into a computational optimization problem. This paper proposes a framework developed to help policy-makers plan the best combination of non-pharmaceutical interventions and to change them over time.

Background: Antiseizure medications (ASMs) may affect nocturnal sleep and daytime vigilance. Perampanel (PER), a third-generation ASM, showed to improve nocturnal sleep in patients with epilepsy (PWE). Although ASMs can have beneficial effects on nocturnal sleep and daytime sleepiness, no study investigated the effect of PER on both sleep-wake cycle and daytime sleepiness.

Developing clinical quality champions is an important strategy for improving health care quality. The NorthShore Quality and Patient Safety Fellowship was a yearlong program for practicing physicians devoting 4 hours/wk to a didactic curriculum and quality practicum. Thirty-seven clinicians completed the Fellowship from 2011 to 2018.

There are many expediencies provided by the use of hiPSCs, which can represent a disease model clinically relevant and predictive, with a great potential if associated to CRISPR/Cas9 technology, a gene editing tool powered by ease and precision never seen before.

Text Messaging to Improve Disease Management in Patients With Painful Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy.

Purpose The purpose of the study was to determine the impact of educational text messages on diabetes self-management activities and outcomes in patients with painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy (pDPN). Methods Patients with pDPN identified from a large integrated health system who agreed to participate were randomized to 6 months of usual care (UC) or UC plus twice-daily diabetes self-management text messages (UC+TxtM). Outcomes included the Pain Numerical Rating Scale, Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities (SDSCA), questions on diabetes health beliefs, and glycated hemoglobin (A1C).

From the "Fat Capsule" to the "Fat Belt": Limiting Protective Lipofilling on Irradiated Expanders for Breast Reconstruction to Selective Key Areas.

Background: The number of patients undergoing mastectomy and immediate breast reconstruction with tissue expanders followed by post-mastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT) is exponentially increasing. To reduce the rate of complications, in 2011, the senior author of this manuscript described the use of protective lipofilling in patients undergoing unplanned PMRT to the expander with a specific protocol aiming to decrease the rate of complications.

Objectives: A study was performed to evaluate the thickness of the breast irradiated tissue to create a standard pattern of "protective" lipofilling infiltration on limited key areas that could re-establish a thickness similar to non-radiotreated tissues.
