Individuals without a protective antibody level are susceptible to measles infection. There are differences in the persistence of antibodies after vaccination and infection, while the impact of gender on this process has not been sufficiently studied. Measles Ig G antibodies were measured in 1742 employees of a large hospital facility-403 men and 1339 women aged from 25 to 67 years; 15% participants had antibody levels less than the protective threshold of ≥0.

The complicated and combined course of alimentary toxicoinfections are practically the main causes of all the lethal outcomes in these diseases. In this work the data on the recent progress in the rehydration therapy of acute enteric infections are presented. The authors established that combined forms constituted 15.

153 chronic alcoholics were given treatment against food poisoning. 55 of them developed withdrawal syndrome, 98 had alcoholic psychosis including 88 with delirium tremens. The acute intestinal infection in these alcoholics was managed with rehydration using polyionic crystalloid solutions under controlled diuresis.

An opinion on the expediency of working out criteria for dividing acute dysentery patients into risk groups, depending on the development of immune deficiency, has been put forward. The results of the study of some characteristics of T-cell immunity system in 228 acute dysentery patients in relation to their clinical state are presented. Measurements of total active T lymphocytes, T helpers and T suppressors have been made.

Comprehensive analysis of the incidence of acute enteric infections (AEI) in Moscow over the period of 1985-1990 was made. The analysis demonstrated serious drawbacks in the diagnosis of a number of AEI, including alimentary toxicoinfections, salmonellosis, dysentery, typhoid-paratyphoid diseases, Yersinia and Escherichia infections, and in rendering timely medical care of the patients at the prehospitalization stage. The analysis also revealed that in all AEI the outpatient and inpatient diagnosis still did not coincide in too many cases, and the diagnostic errors in recognition of surgical diseases in infectious patients were too frequent.

Ciprofloxacin (Bayer, FRG), a derivative of hydroxyquinolone acid, was used for the treatment of patients with shigellosis and salmonellosis and for the sanitation of Salmonella carriers. The drug turned out to exert a positive effect on bacteriological sanitation of the body. In order to treat patients with food toxinfection of unknown etiology, use was made of intetrix (Farmacos, Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia).

The authors describe the data obtained by them during many years of pathogenetic treatment of patients with acute intestinal infections. Note the main errors made during treatment and giving rise to unfavourable outcomes. Give practical recommendations for carrying out pathogenetic therapy bearing in mind the age-associated characteristics and associated diseases.

The incretory pancreatic function has been studied in 35 patients with a moderately severe course of acute dysentery. The blood plasma content of insulin, glucagon and gastrin was determined by means of radioimmunoassay with standard kits during the acute course of the disease and prior to discharge of patients. The endocrine pancreatic function was found to be deranged with an increased insulin content during convalescence; the glucagon content was decreased during the period of the disease and the gastrin content was decreased in the acute period.

Some indices of pancreatic endocrine function were studied over time in patients with acute dysentery. The plasma levels of insulin, C-peptide, glucagon, and gastrin were determined by a radioimmunoassay. 35 patients and 30 healthy controls were examined.

Some immunity indices were studied in patients with acute dysentery. The number of total and active T-lymphocytes, T mu- and T gamma-cells, T-rabbit, T-staphylococcal, B-total and B-lymphocytes forming rosettes with mouse erythrocytes were determined for assessment of the immune status. Changes in the above indices with relation to the severity of the disease were noted.
