Background: Dental caries (DC) are more prevalent in individuals with diabetes than in healthy individuals. However, the association between glycaemic control and DC has not been well characterized in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We therefore assessed the association between glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) serum concentrations and the prevalence of DC in patients with T2DM.

Clinical outcomes of medical treatment of acute type A intramural hematoma.

A retrospective study was performed in 30 patients who were treated for type A intramural hematoma from 1999 to 2008, of whom 24 were initially treated without surgical intervention. These 24 patients were followed up for 3.3 +/- 3.

[Severe coronary artery spasm immediately after aortic valve replacement].

We report a case of 72-year-old man with severe manifestations of coronary artery spasm immediately after aortic valve replacement (AVR), which was associated with hemodynamic and arrhythmic instability. The AVR was performed under mild hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass (34 degrees C), and retrograde blood cardioplegia was intermittently delivered at the same temperature. Immediately after the operation, the patient suddenly developed severe bradycardia and hypotension, and repeated ventricular fibrillation.

Long-term clinical performance of AAI pacing in patients with sick sinus syndrome: a comparison with dual-chamber pacing.

Aims: In this clinical study, we compared two groups of age-matched patients, AAI and DDD, to evaluate the clinical benefits of AAI pacing in patients with sick sinus syndrome (SSS) and normal atrioventricular (AV) conduction.

Methods And Results: Ninety-five patients with SSS implanted with AAI pacemakers were compared with 101 SSS patients implanted with DDD pacemakers. Mortality, chronic atrial fibrillation, lead survival rates, and reoperation rates were compared by Kaplan-Meier analysis.

Optimal size of prostheses for functioning of the aortic prosthetic valve in aortic and mitral valve replacement with annular enlargement through Manouguian's technique.

There is not yet agreement about the optimal size of the prostheses in aortic and mitral valve replacement with Manouguian's technique. In this technique, the aortic prosthetic valve can be pushed upon the mitral prosthesis which may cause dysfunction of the aortic prosthetic valve. The aim of this study was to clarify the size of the prostheses needed to avoid dysfunction of the aortic prosthetic valve.
