Background: According to the gene-environment interactions (GEi) concept, the mechanism of health impairment can be explained by genetic factors, environmental factors, or their interaction. Physical and mental health effects resulting from environmental exposure may be classified either as toxicity, immune response, and allergic reaction. Moreover, despite the already established therapeutic approaches to bronchial asthma and decreasing mortality due to bronchial asthma, patients with difficult and severe asthma are increasing in number.

Genetic and environmental factors and their interactions cause diseases and deteriorate health (Genetic and Environmental Interaction). Exposure to environmental factors plays a major role in the deterioration of health in the workplace.Occupational asthma (OA) is a common disorder in the workplace.

Methods: In 30,685 Japanese health-examination participants, we genotyped the two most common nonfunctional variants of (NFV-), W258X (rs121907892) and R90H (rs121907896), in 1040 hypouricemic individuals (SUA ≤ 3.
Objectives: Up to 0.3% of Japanese have hypouricaemia. Most cases appear to result from a hereditary disease, renal hypouricaemia (RHUC), which causes exercise-induced acute kidney injury and urolithiasis.

The aim of this study is to elucidate the independent contribution of each oral disease to the perception of dental problems among Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) personnel in order to make the dental classification guidelines more precise for the prediction of future dental problems.
Materials And Methods: Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force personnel who were examined during the annual dental checkup in 2013 answered questions about the experience of dental problems within the last 12 months in 2014.
Objectives: Genome-wide meta-analyses of clinically defined gout were performed to identify subtype-specific susceptibility loci. Evaluation using selection pressure analysis with these loci was also conducted to investigate genetic risks characteristic of the Japanese population over the last 2000-3000 years.
Methods: Two genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of 3053 clinically defined gout cases and 4554 controls from Japanese males were performed using the Japonica Array and Illumina Array platforms.
Control of lymphocyte infiltration in kidney is a potential therapeutic strategy for lupus nephritis, considering that control of lymphocyte migration by sphingosine 1 phosphate has been implicated in inflammation-related pathology. The peptide inhibitor of the transendothelial migration (PEPITEM)/cadherin (CDH) 15 axis was recently reported to promote sphingosine 1 phosphate secretion. In this study, we investigated whether CDH15 is expressed in the kidney of MRL/lpr mice and whether lymphocyte infiltration is suppressed by exogenously administered PEPITEM.

Most fluoride (approximately 70%) is filtered by the kidneys; humans or experimental animals with renal damage therefore may be more affected by fluoride exposure than those with normal kidney function. Tubulointerstitial fibrosis, which involves macrophage-promoted extracellular matrix production and myofibroblast migration, can be induced in rats by unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO).

However, there has not been enough information for their in vivo application. The safety of self-assembling peptides for the application on the brain was examined using behavioral tests for each rat in this study.

We compared the physicians' diagnoses to the diagnoses based on the patients' interview sheets including diagnostic criteria only.
Methods: We examined 287 patients with complaints of SHS-like symptoms.
Background: The toxicity of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) may be related to the immune system. The objective of this study was to obtain information for immunotoxic mechanisms of MWCNT in situ.
Methods: Using whole-body inhalation, male and female rats were exposed to 0, 0.
Glass wool and continuous glass filaments have been used in industry. We examined the irritability of those among Japanese. A patch test was performed on 43 volunteers for the followings: glass wool for non-residential use with and without a urea-modified phenolic resin binder, that for residential use with and without the binder, and continuous glass filaments with diameters of 4, 7, 9, and 13 µm.

The objectives of this study were to describe these measures and the characteristics of infected individuals, and to assess the measures' effectiveness.
Methodology/principal Findings: Border control and community containment measures implemented from April to June (Period I: April 28-May 21, Period II: May 22-June 18) 2009 were described.
Glutaraldehyde (GA) and ortho-phtalaldehyde (OPA) have been widely used as major components of disinfectants in hospitals. We evaluated the alterations in GA or OPA in rats after subacute inhalation exposure by determining levels of neurotransmitters (norepinephrine [NE], dopamine [DA], DA metabolites, dihydroxyphenylacetic acid [DOPAC] and homovanillic acid [HVA], indoleamine serotonin [5-HT] and 5-HT metabolite, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid [5-HIAA]) in discrete brain regions using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) equipped with an electrochemical detector. Female Wistar rats were exposed to 0, 50, 100, or 200 ppb gaseous GA or OPA by inhalation for 1 h per day, 5 d per week for 4 wk.

The indices were cell viability, glutamate concentration in the cell supernatant, and cell proliferation. Lower cell viability was observed among cells exposed to 0.

If workers do not use their results of those checkups in their daily health management, the merit of this law will not be realized. Therefore, it is important to identify the predictors to improve their motivation to use the results of health checkups.

At the plant for this study, workers who have one or more abnormal findings pointed out in their annual health checkups are summoned by occupational health staff and subsequently attend health consultations conducted by occupational health nurses each year. We investigated what kinds of health consultations have improved the workers' use of the results of their annual health checkups by an anonymous self-administered questionnaire survey.
