Article Synopsis
  • Enfortumab Vedotin (EV) is an effective treatment for advanced urothelial carcinoma (UC) patients who have already undergone other therapies, but there’s limited understanding of the factors that impact patient outcomes.
  • A retrospective study was conducted to identify clinical factors affecting progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in these patients, leading to the development of a new risk classification model based on identified prognostic factors.
  • The study found that high levels of C-reactive protein and hypercalcemia were significant predictors of patient outcomes, allowing for the classification of patients into three distinct risk groups, which showed notable differences in survival rates.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between adverse events (AEs) from cabozantinib and progression-free survival (PFS) in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC).
  • A total of 40 patients were analyzed, revealing that hypertension was the only AE associated with longer PFS, while most patients experienced at least one AE.
  • The findings indicate that treatment-induced hypertension could be a significant indicator of better PFS in this patient population.

This report presents a case of a 46-year-old woman in whom contralateral pneumothorax occurred during retroperitoneal laparoscopic donor nephrectomy without any evidence of diaphragmatic injuries. After the start of carbon dioxide-induced pneumoperitoneum, the patient's end-tidal carbon dioxide pressure and heart rate suddenly increased. The surgery was then paused, and a chest X-ray revealed a right pneumothorax accompanied by pneumomediastinum.

Aims/hypothesis: We compared the effects of insulin degludec (IDeg; Des(B30)LysB29(γ-Glu Nε-hexadecandioyl) human insulin) and insulin glargine (IGlar; A21Gly,B31Arg,B32Arg human insulin) on the day-to-day variability of fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels in individuals with type 1 diabetes treated with basal-bolus insulin injections.

Methods: The effects of basal-bolus insulin therapy for 4 weeks with either IDeg or IGlar as the basal insulin in adult C-peptide-negative outpatients with type 1 diabetes were investigated in an open-label, multicentre, randomised, crossover trial. Randomisation was conducted using a centralised allocation process.

Primary hyperoxaluria (PH) is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder characterized by overproduction of oxalate caused by a deficiency in a hepatic enzyme. The excess oxalate combines with calcium in the kidneys to form deposits of calcium oxalate, which can lead to nephrocalcinosis and renal failure. PH type 1 (PH1), the most common form of this disease, is caused by a deficiency of the liver-specific enzyme alanine/glyoxylate aminotransferase (AGT).

Human type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that results from the autoreactive destruction of pancreatic β cells by T cells. Antigen presenting cells including dendritic cells and macrophages are required to activate and suppress antigen-specific T cells. It has been suggested that antigen uptake from live cells by dendritic cells via scavenger receptor class A (SR-A) may be important.

We have revised a part of the diagnostic criteria for fulminant type 1 diabetes. The new criteria were set both to express the essence of this disease of rapid increase of patients' blood glucose and to be highly sensitive to reduce the misdiagnosis. After analyzing the data of 382 patients with newly-diagnosed fulminant type 1 diabetes, we adopted the glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level of 8.

Aim: Oral intake of nutrients is often compromised in elderly, multimorbid patients, but parenteral nutrition causes intestinal atrophy and impairs intestinal function. To uncover the molecular mechanisms by which amino acids are involved in intestinal atrophy and recovery, we studied whether the rapamycin-sensitive mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) complex 1 (mTORC1) pathway is involved in this process.

Methods: C57BL/6N mice were fed a glucose solution alone, glucose solution with amino acids or normal chow diet for various lengths of time.
