Purpose: To explore pre-treatment risk factors for overall survival (OS) in advanced urothelial carcinoma (UC) patients treated with first-line (1L) chemotherapy in sequential therapy (ST) era. Additionally, to evaluate the proportion of patients who were not able to undergo subsequent immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy according to the subgroups stratified by the risk factors.

Methods: A multicenter retrospective study was conducted.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of 793 bacterial strains from patients with complicated urinary tract infections across eight species, using national surveillance data collected in Japan from July 2020 to December 2021.
  • Fluoroquinolone resistance, particularly among Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, has risen over the years, with levofloxacin resistance in E. coli increasing from 28.6% in 2008 to 44.5% in 2021, while MRSA vancomycin susceptibility decreased significantly.
  • Extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing strains were identified in notable proportions, with E. coli (24.8%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (16

  • The study aimed to assess how effective local radiation therapy (LRT) is in preventing local symptoms associated with muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) by reviewing 133 patient records over five years.
  • Out of 114 patients analyzed, 26.3% experienced local symptoms such as hematuria and bladder pain, with certain risk factors like previous non-MIBC and lower radiation doses identified.
  • The findings suggest that increasing the radiation dose to 50 Gray or more could help reduce these local symptoms and improve care strategies for MIBC patients expected to have good survival outcomes.

Objectives: To evaluate the risk factors for intravesical recurrence in patients with newly diagnosed Ta high-grade non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer and the optimal management to reduce the risk of recurrence.

Methods: We retrospectively evaluated Ta high-grade bladder cancer in patients who were newly diagnosed by transurethral resection from January 2007 through October 2018. Using multivariate analyses, we evaluated the risk factors and therapeutic options affecting intravesical recurrence and stratified the patients according to the risk numbers.

Gemcitabine (GEM) is currently a standard chemotherapeutic agent for metastatic urothelial carcinoma (mUC). Fever isknown to be an adverse effect of GEM ; however, itsincidence, etiology and clinical significance have not been evaluated. The objective of this study was to elucidate the characteristics and clinical significance of fever associated with GEM in patients with mUC receiving GEM plus cisplatin (GC) chemotherapy.

Introduction: We evaluated the incidence and risk factors for antiresorptive agent-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (ARONJ) in prostate and kidney cancer patients.

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical data of 547 patients from 13 hospitals. Prostate and kidney cancer patients with bone metastases who were treated with a bone-modifying agent (BMA) between January 2012 and February 2019 were enrolled.

The antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of bacterial pathogens isolated from patients with complicated urinary tract infections were analyzed using national surveillance data. The data consisted of 881 bacterial strains from eight clinically relevant species. The data were collected for the third national surveillance project from January 2015 to March 2016 by the Japanese Society of Chemotherapy, the Japanese Association for Infectious Disease, and the Japanese Society of Clinical Microbiology.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the effectiveness of targeted prophylaxis using rectal swab cultures in men undergoing prostate biopsies, focusing on fluoroquinolone-resistant Escherichia coli.
  • Conducted between June 2013 and December 2014, patients were tested for antibiotic resistance and treated accordingly, with 18.6% found to carry resistant strains.
  • The findings suggest that using targeted antibiotic strategies can lower serious infection risks post-biopsy, emphasizing the importance of testing for antibiotic resistance prior to treatment.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to clarify the prognostic indicators for upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) following intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) therapy for nonmuscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC).

Methods: Data from 402 patients who received intravesical BCG therapy between January 1990 and November 2011 were collected from 10 institutes. The median follow-up interval from transurethral resection of the bladder tumor (TURBT) followed by BCG treatment was 50.

Purpose: We prospectively evaluated the 90-day postoperative mortality and morbidity of open radical cystectomy by using a standardized reporting methodology. Additionally, we assessed the preoperative characteristics to determine risk factors for major complications.

Methods: This multicenter prospective study included 185 consecutive patients undergoing open radical cystectomy from October 2010 through March 2014.

Background: Although serum cystatin C and creatinine are used as practical markers of renal function, the discrepancy between them in postrenal acute kidney injury (AKI) cases was reported. The aim of this study was to determine whether the preoperative serum cystatin C (pre-CysC) level could predict clinical outcomes after treatment in patients with postrenal AKI.

Methods: Patients who underwent urological interventions with postrenal AKI were enrolled in this prospective observational study.

To investigate antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of various bacterial pathogens isolated from complicated urinary tract infection (UTI) cases, the Japanese Society of Chemotherapy, the Japanese Association of Infectious Disease, and the Japanese Society of Clinical Microbiology conducted the second nationwide surveillance from January to September 2011. With the cooperation of 42 medical institutions throughout Japan, 1036 strains belonging to 8 clinically relevant bacterial species were collected. Among methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strain, the vancomycin (VCM) MIC for 5.

Objective: Although some new drugs for castration-resistant prostate cancer are available, docetaxel still plays an important role in castration-resistant prostate cancer treatment. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of docetaxel and prednisolone in patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review of castration-resistant prostate cancer patients who received docetaxel and prednisolone at 14 hospitals in the Sapporo Medical University Urologic Oncology Consortium from August 2004 to December 2011.

  • A study was conducted to evaluate different antimicrobial prophylaxis (AMP) protocols for patients undergoing radical prostatectomy at Hakodate Goryoukaku Hospital from 2003 to 2005.
  • The study included 67 patients who were given intravenous antibiotics (either cephalosporins or penicillins) with protocols consisting of 3-day, 2-day, and 1-day AMP plans.
  • Results showed that the incidence of infectious complications was similar across all three groups, with no severe infections noted, concluding that a single day of AMP is adequate for these patients.
