Leiomyosarcoma of the urinary bladder in a patient with bilateral retinoblastoma.

We report a case of bladder leiomyosarcoma in a 27-year-old woman who had previously been treated with surgery and radiation for bilateral retinoblastoma. The patient was admitted to hospital with discomfort on micturition. Cystoscopy revealed a bladder tumor covered by normal urothelium.

Autoimmune pancreatitis-associated prostatitis: distinct clinicopathological entity.

Autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) has been recently proposed as a disease entity, and an elevated serum IgG4 level is a characteristic finding in it. This disease is sometimes associated with other inflammatory diseases, such as retroperitoneal fibrosis and sclerosing cholangitis. To elucidate the clinicopathological characteristics of AIP-associated prostatitis (AIP-P), the clinicopathological findings of AIP-P patients were evaluated, and the immunohistochemical expression of the IgG subclasses (IgG1, IgG2, IgG3, and IgG4) in six AIP-P patients was compared with that in 10 control patients who were clinically diagnosed as suspicious for carcinoma but who had focal inflammation without adenocarcinoma on histological examination of the prostate.

Unique maternal deletion of 15q in a patient with some symptoms of Prader-Willi syndrome.

Background: Human chromosome 15q11-q13 is a critical region for Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) and Angelman syndrome (AS) and most of the genes are under the condition of imprinting mechanism. PWS results from the loss of expression of paternally expressed genes and AS of maternally expressed genes. In this study molecular studies about a patient with congenital anomalies and mental retardation are analyzed.

Prostate-specific antigen, Gleason sum and clinical T stage for predicting the need for radionuclide bone scan for prostate cancer patients in Japan.

Aim: In the present study, we evaluated the relationships between prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level and bone metastasis, between Gleason sum and bone metastasis, and between clinical T stage and bone metastasis in Japanese patients.

Methods: Between November 1998 and June 2004, we performed ultrasound-guided biopsies on 709 patients (mean age: 70.5 years, range: 39-90).

Reconstruction of posterior urethral disruption: tips for success from our experience and from a literature review.

Repair of a posterior urethral disruption associated with a pelvic fracture is a challenge for urologic surgeons. Here, we provide surgical and strategic tips to facilitate the delayed surgical repair of urethral distraction defects. Nine patients each with a traumatic posterior urethral distraction defect underwent delayed transperineal or transperineoabdominal bulboprostatic anastomosis.

Rupture of urachal diverticulum in radiation cystitis and neurogenic bladder dysfunction after radical hysterectomy.

We experienced a rare case of the rupture of the urachal diverticulum in radiation cystitis and neurogenic bladder after radical hysterectomy. A 61-year-old woman presented with severe lower abdominal pain and urinary retention. Abdominal computed tomography revealed that the urachal remnant contained a large volume of urine that leaked to subcutaneous tissue.

Experience with flexible video cystoscope equipped with built-in high-frequency cauterizing element for transurethral resection of the bladder.

We successfully treated three patients using the flexible video cystoscope (CYF-240A, Olympus, Japan) for superficial bladder cancer under local anesthesia and/or spinal anesthesia. The major advantage of this new technique is that surgeons can use digital pictures and high frequency cauterization. This new system provides good quality of life for bladder cancer patients experiencing frequent recurrences.

Successful treatment of arterial priapism with radiologic selective transcatheter embolization of the internal pudendal artery.

We report our successful treatment of arterial priapism by means of radiologic selective transcatheter embolization of the internal pudendal artery using an absorbable gelatin sponge (Spongel).

Sequence-specific protection of plasmid DNA from restriction endonuclease hydrolysis by pyrrole-imidazole-cyclopropapyrroloindole conjugates.

The pyrrole-imidazole (Py-Im) triamide-cyclopropa pyrroloindole (CPI) conjugates ImPyImLDu86 (7) and ImImPyLDu86 (14) were synthesized and their alkylating activities and inhibitory effects on DNA hydrolysis by restriction endonucleases were examined. Sequencing gel analysis demonstrated that conjugates 7 and 14 specifically alkylated DNA at 5'-CGCGCG-3' and 5'-PyGGCCPu-3', respectively. Agarose gel electrophoresis indicated that incubation of a supercoiled plasmid, pSPORT I (4109 bp), with conjugate 7 effectively inhibited its hydrolysis by BssHII (5'-G_CGCGC-3'), whereas conjugate 14 had no effect on this hydrolysis.
