Mitochondria contribute to cellular metabolism by providing a specialised milieu for energising cells by incorporating and processing the metabolites. However, heterogeneity in the mitochondria within is only partially elucidated. Mitochondria dynamically alter their morphology and functions during the life of animals, in which cells proliferate and grow.

The Cadaveric Anatomy and Surgical Training Laboratory (CAST Lab) at Hokkaido University and Kushiro City General Hospital (KCGH) are interconnected by a dedicated 1 Gbps internet line, spanning 300 km. An operation unit and double SC were installed at CAST Lab, whereas the double SC proctor was installed at KCGH.

We speculated that during the COVID-19 pandemic, sufficient medical resources were maintained in board-certified hospitals, resulting in favorable short-term outcomes, whereas hospital functions in non-board-certified hospitals declined, leading to mortality increase. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on short-term outcomes after esophagectomy, based on the scale of the facilities.

In the interactions between plants and chewing herbivores, such as lepidopteran larvae, oral secretions (OS) are deposited on wounded sites, which results in the elicitation of plant immune responses. The widely conserved receptor-like kinase CHITIN ELICITOR RECEPTOR KINASE 1 (CERK1) has been broadly associated with the recognition of microbial components, such as fungal chitin, but its relevance to herbivory remained unclear.

However, its expression and role in cancer stemness remain largely unexplored in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). The aim of this study was to clarify the role of LY6D in PDAC.

We evaluated the outcomes of surgical resection following chemotherapy for LMGC in a prospective single-arm multicenter interventional study.
Methods: Patients with synchronous or metachronous LMGC received 2-4 cycles of standard chemotherapy and proceeded to surgical resection if restaging showed a non-progressive disease with a chance of R0 resection.

As a result of the recent advances in first-line treatment including chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, and immune checkpoint inhibitor immunotherapy (ICI) for locally advanced/metastatic initially unresectable esophageal and esophagogastric junction cancer, surgery aiming at cure after initial treatment, so-called "conversion surgery" has become more common in this field. Several studies have indicated encouraging survival outcomes for patients after conversion surgery with R0 resection. However, various issues, such the utility and the safety of conversion surgery remain unclear.

Methods: A total of 272 patients who underwent esophagectomy at our institute between 2014 and 2022 were enrolled in this study. These patients were divided based on two different types of cutlines on the lesser curvature: conventional group (n = 141) following the traditional cutline and modified group (n = 131) adopting a modified cutline.
The interim analysis of the CIRCULATE-Japan GALAXY observational study demonstrated the association of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA)-based molecular residual disease (MRD) detection with recurrence risk and benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy (ACT) in resectable colorectal cancer (CRC). This updated analysis with a 23-month median follow-up, including 2,240 patients with stage II-III colon cancer or stage IV CRC, reinforces the prognostic value of ctDNA positivity during the MRD window with significantly inferior disease-free survival (DFS; hazard ratio (HR): 11.99, P < 0.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection prior to gastroenterological cancer surgeries on postoperative complications using data from a nationwide database in Japan.
Methods: Data on patients who underwent surgery for cancer including esophageal, gastric, colon, rectal, liver, and pancreatic cancer between July 1, 2019, and September 300, 2022, from real-world sources in Japan were analyzed.

Diterpenoid Phytoalexin Factor (DPF) is a key transcription factor involved in diterpenoid phytoalexin (DP) biosynthesis under non-stressed conditions in rice (Oryza sativa L.). Using clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9, DPF knockout rice lines were generated.

Few studies have reported perioperative changes in the body composition of patients with colorectal cancer. Therefore, this study aimed at clarifying changes in body composition during the perioperative period and identifying risk factors for skeletal muscle mass loss in patients with colorectal cancer.

Immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy has dramatically improved patient prognosis, and thereby transformed the treatment in various cancer types including esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) in the past decade. Monoclonal antibodies that selectively inhibit programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) activity has now become standard of care in the treatment of ESCC in metastatic settings, and has a high expectation to provide clinical benefit during perioperative period. Further, anti-cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated protein 4 (CTLA-4) monoclonal antibody has also been approved in the treatment of recurrent/metastatic ESCC in combination with anti-PD-1 antibody.

Methods: A total of 53 patients with mass-forming intrahepatic cholangiocarcinomas were selected from 2007 to 2021 and analyzed based on several parameters, including the preoperative computed tomography pattern (enhancement in the arterial phase of dynamic contrast-enhanced computed tomography), clinical data, and tumor microenvironment evaluated by immunohistochemistry. The hyperenhancement (n = 13) and hypoenhancement (n = 40) groups were defined using the 50% cutoff of tumors with higher attenuation than the liver parenchyma.
Background: The COVID-19 outbreak made conventional medical care impossible, forcing changes in both healthcare providers and patients. In Japan, COVID-19 infection began spreading in earnest in 2020 and exploded in 2021. There was concern that the medical impact of COVID-19 in 2021 would differ from that in 2020.

In cancer cells, m6A is upregulated, contributing to their malignant transformation. In this study, we analyzed gene expression and m6A modification in cancer tissues, ducts, and acinar cells derived from pancreatic cancer patients using MeRIP-seq.
