Change in dominant genotype of Microsporum canis, a causative fungus of zoonotic dermatophytosis, in Japan over the past 40 years.

Multilocus microsatellite typing was performed on 124 strains of Microsporum canis, which is the most prevalent causative fungus of zoonotic dermatophytosis, isolated in Japan between 1974 and 1981. The strains had been enclosed in glass ampoules by freeze dried process. Genotypes were detected by capillary electrophoresis targeted on six microsatellite regions, and 19 genotypes were found among these 124 strains.

Genetic relationship between Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. interdigitale and Arthroderma vanbreuseghemii.

Thirty-nine Arthroderma vanbreuseghemii isolates identified by mating behavior were assayed to determine their ribosomal RNA gene internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region genotypes. Twenty-two isolates of mating type (+) and 4 of (-) showed the genotype of Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. interdigitale, 9 isolates of mating type (+) and 4 of (-) showed the genotype of A.

Arthrographis kalrae, a rare causal agent of onychomycosis, and its occurrence in natural and commercially available soils.

We report a rare case of onychomycosis due to Arthrographis kalrae, and describe an attempt to elucidate the source of the infection by fungal isolation and PCR-based methods for detection of A. kalrae. The patient was a 63-year-old Japanese man, whose fingernails, excluding the right index finger, were markedly dystrophic.
