Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates management strategies for intermediate-risk papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) with lateral neck lymph node metastasis, focusing on comparing outcomes between lobectomy plus lateral neck dissection (LND) and total thyroidectomy plus LND.
  • The research was conducted at Ito Hospital in Tokyo, Japan, involving patients who underwent surgery from 2005 to 2012, excluding those with high-risk PTCs or concurrent thyroid cancers.
  • Findings from 401 patients show that overall survival rates after 5, 10, and 15 years were comparable between the two surgical options, indicating lobectomy plus LND is a viable alternative to total thyroidectomy for certain patients.

Dental implants have been widely used with success, but long-term usage sometimes leads to implant loss. The purpose of this review was to summarize the etiology of early and late failure requiring dental implant removal and the treatment strategies for the removal of failed implants and reimplantation. Early failures are often caused by patient-related factors, such as smoking, diabetes, radiotherapy, bone quality, and periodontitis of the remaining natural teeth.

Endodontic-periodontal lesions are characterized by the involvement of the pulp and periodontal disease in the same tooth. Despite successful root canal treatment, if the majority of bone support has been lost from periodontitis, the tooth may have a poor prognosis. In severe endodontic-periodontal lesions, the periodontal tissue regenerates poorly because of the significant loss of the periodontal ligament and cementum, poor tooth stability, and bone defect morphology unfavorable for bone regeneration.

Objectives: Xerostomia, a common complication of type 2 diabetes, leads to an increased risk of caries, dysphagia, and dysgeusia. Although anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) antibodies, such as ranibizumab (RBZ), have been used to treat diabetic retinopathy, their effects on the salivary glands are unknown. This study evaluated the effects of RBZ on salivary glands to reduce inflammation and restore salivary function in a mouse model of type 2 diabetes.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the potential of Endothelin-1 (ET-1), a peptide derived from vascular endothelial cells, as a biomarker for diagnosing peri-implant diseases.

Methods: A cohort of 29 patients with a total of 76 implants was included in this study and subsequently divided into three groups based on peri-implant clinical parameters and radiographic examination: healthy (peri-implant health) (n = 29), mucositis (n = 22), and peri-implantitis (n = 25) groups. The levels of ET-1 (ρg/site) and interleukin (IL)-1β (ρg/site) in peri-implant sulcus fluid (PISF) samples were determined using enzyme immunoassay.

Poorly differentiated thyroid carcinoma (PDTC) is a rare and extremely aggressive tumor, accounting for about 2-15% of all thyroid cancer. PDTC has a distinct biological behavior compared to well-differentiated and anaplastic thyroid carcinoma and, in last years, it has been classified as a separate entity from both anatomopathological and clinical points of view. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of consensus among clinicians regarding inclusion criteria and definition of PDTC that affects its diagnosis and clinical management.

The mechanical properties of the jawbone play a critical role in determining the successful integration of dental prostheses. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been identified to abnormally accelerate bone turnover rates. However, the impact of CKD on the mechanical characteristics of the jawbone has not been extensively studied.

Purpose: Lenvatinib (LEN) is a multikinase inhibitor that strongly inhibits tyrosine kinase receptors, especially VEGFR-2, which can cause hypertension, as well as strong tumor shrinkage. Though control of any side effects (SEs) is important for maintaining dose intensity (DI), hypertension is particularly important, because blood pressure (BP) can change quickly and respond to LEN administration and withdrawal, and it can be controlled with antihypertensive medications. Focusing on the early phase of treatment, the effect of BP 8 weeks after LEN initiation (BP) on DI at 8 weeks (DI) was investigated.

  • Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) helps prevent damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) during thyroid surgeries, with loss of signal (LOS) indicating potential nerve injury.
  • A study of 1,442 patients documented significant differences in recovery based on the type of LOS, revealing that 74.2% of LOS in benign tumors were global type, while cancer patients more often experienced segmental type paralysis.
  • Postoperative outcomes showed that patients with global LOS had better recovery rates and lower vocal cord dysfunction compared to those with segmental LOS, particularly in cancer cases where segmental LOS led to a significantly higher rate of vocal cord issues at 6 months.
