A pheochromocytoma is a malignant tumor with metastatic potential. Moreover, the cardiovascular effects of abnormal amounts of catecholamines resulting from pheochromocytoma impact prognosis. Resection of the primary tumor is useful for reducing catecholamine production; however, the significance of resection of metastases remains unclear.

Methods: Consecutive patients who underwent salvage surgery following definitive chemoradiotherapy or systemic therapy for initially unresectable lung cancer from 2010 to 2020 were enrolled in this study.

Quality of life, psychological states, and personality traits in patients with pectus excavatum.

Objective: The quality of life (QOL) and psychological states of patients with pectus excavatum (PE) have yet to be well understood. This study aimed to evaluate the health-related QOL (HRQOL), psychological states, and personality traits of patients with PE, alongside the associations of these factors with the severity of PE.

Methods: A cross-sectional evaluation was prospectively performed in patients scheduled to undergo PE repair surgery between July 2019 and April 2021.

Clinicopathological predictors of postoperative long-term myasthenic status in resected thymoma with myasthenia gravis.

Purpose: Surgical patients with thymoma and myasthenia gravis (MG) must have their MG status and oncological outcomes critically monitored. We aimed to identify clinicopathological predictors of the postoperative MG status.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of 40 consecutive surgical patients with MG-related thymomas between 2002 and 2020.

Neurogenesis impairment with glial activation in the hippocampus-connected regions of intracerebroventricular streptozotocin-injected mice.

Adult neurogenesis in the hippocampus and subventricular zone (SVZ) is impaired by intracerebroventricular administration of streptozotocin (icv-STZ) to rodents. Although neural cells in the several brain regions which connect with the hippocampus or SVZ is thought to be involved in the adult neurogenesis, few studies have investigated morphological alterations of glial cells in these areas. The present study revealed that icv-STZ induces reduction of neural progenitor cells and a dramatic increase in reactive astrocytes and microglia especially in the hippocampus and various hippocampus-connected brain areas.

Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to avoid the consequences of visual impairment. However, in early stages, many visual problems are making it difficult to detect.

Combined Ravitch and Nuss procedure for pectus excavatum with dyspnea following scoliosis repair.

Pectus excavatum (PE) is often associated with scoliosis and can elicit cardiovascular disturbances under rare conditions. Here we report a patient who was treated with a combined Ravitch and Nuss procedure for PE with dyspnea following scoliosis repair to improve her symptoms. The patient was a 49-year-old woman with a history of PE and scoliosis.

Combined Ravitch and Nuss procedure for patients with severe pectus excavatum: technique and initial results.

The Nuss procedure for pectus excavatum (PE) is both less invasive and very simple compared to the Ravitch procedure. However, it may be difficult to perform the Nuss procedure in cases of severe PE. Therefore, we developed a Combined Ravitch and Nuss (CRN) procedure and examined its effectiveness in patients with severe PE.

Feasibility and safety of percutaneous cryoablation under local anesthesia for the treatment of malignant lung tumors: a retrospective cohort study.

Background: In our institution, computed tomography (CT)-guided percutaneous cryoablation has been performed in patients with malignant lung tumors under local anesthesia. This study aimed to examine the feasibility and safety of percutaneous cryoablation for the treatment of malignant lung tumors.

Methods: From July 2002 to December 2016, 227 patients (56 with primary lung cancer and 171 with metastatic lung tumor) underwent percutaneous cryoablation for the treatment of malignant lung tumors using a cryosurgical unit at our institution.

The differences between conventional lead, thin lead, and leadless pacemakers regarding effects on tricuspid regurgitation in the early phase.

Purpose: Trans-venous pacemaker leads are associated with worsening of tricuspid regurgitation (TR) after pacemaker implantation (PMI) in some cases. Recently, leadless pacemakers and thin ventricular pacemaker leads without a stylet lumen have become popular. However, the differences in the effects of these leads on TR are unclear.

Unfavourable outcomes in patients with heart failure with higher preserved left ventricular ejection fraction.

Aims: Newly introduced drugs for heart failure (HF) have been reported to improve the prognosis of HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) in the lower range of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). We hypothesized that a higher LVEF is related to an unfavourable prognosis in patients with HFpEF.

Methods And Results: We tested this hypothesis by analysing the data from a prospective multicentre cohort study in 255 patients admitted to the hospital due to decompensated HF (LVEF > 40% at discharge).

Clinical utility of reticulocyte hemoglobin equivalent in patients with heart failure.

Anemia and iron deficiency (ID) are common in patients with heart failure (HF) and intravenous (IV) administration of iron to patients hospitalized for decompensated HF with ID improves outcome. The diagnosis of ID in routine practice is based on serum ferritin and transferrin saturation (TSAT) but both have limitations; alternatives should be considered. Reticulocyte hemoglobin equivalent (Ret-He) reflects iron content in reticulocytes but its clinical utility in patients with HF remains uncertain.

Separate evaluation of unilateral lung function using upright/supine CT in a patient with diaphragmatic paralysis.

Background: Unilateral diaphragmatic paralysis is a condition in which the unilateral diaphragm is paralyzed and elevated. Orthopnea due to lung compression by an elevated diaphragm in the supine position is common in patients with unilateral diaphragmatic paralysis. Although its symptom is posture-dependent, the effect of posture on lung function in unilateral diaphragmatic paralysis has not been studied.

Analyzing the Effect of Diverse Gaze and Head Direction on Facial Expression Recognition With Photo-Reflective Sensors Embedded in a Head-Mounted Display.

As one of the facial expression recognition techniques for Head-Mounted Display (HMD) users, embedded photo-reflective sensors have been used. In this paper, we investigate how gaze and face directions affect facial expression recognition using the embedded photo-reflective sensors. First, we collected a dataset of five facial expressions (Neutral, Happy, Angry, Sad, Surprised) while looking in diverse directions by moving 1) the eyes and 2) the head.

A 70-Year-Old Woman With Long-Term Nonresolving Pneumonia.

A 70-year-old woman who had received a diagnosis of pneumonia in the right lower lobe was treated with antibiotics at a general practitioner's clinic 9 months earlier. Her pneumonia had improved, but the cough and lung infiltrates persisted for > 6 months, so the patient was referred to our hospital. She had undergone surgery for breast cancer 30 years earlier but had no other medical history.
