Article Synopsis
  • * 160 patients with hypertension, kidney disease, or heart disease were divided into a treatment group, which used the device, and a control group, which did not.
  • * Results showed that the treatment group reduced their salt intake by an average of 1.9 g/day after using the device, while the control group saw no changes in their salt intake.

Berteroin is a bioactive substance classified as an isothiocyanate found in cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, arugula, and salad leaves. In this study, we aimed to determine whether berteroin exerts anti-inflammatory effects on human periodontal ligament cells (HPDLCs), a resident cells of periodontal tissue. Berteroin suppressed interleukin (IL)-1β or tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α-induced chemokines (C-C motif chemokine ligand (CCL)2, CCL20, C-X-C motif chemokine ligand (CXCL)10, IL-8, and IL-6) production and intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1 expression in HPDLCs.

Objectives: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease induced by periodontal disease-causing bacteria. It has been shown that excessive immune response against bacteria is involved in periodontal tissue destruction including alveolar bone resorption. Erucin is a biologically active substance found in cruciferous plants such as arugula and is classified as an isothiocyanate.

Increased intra-individual variability of a variety of biomarkers is generally associated with poor health and reflects physiological dysregulation. Correlations among these biomarker variabilities should then represent interactions among heterogeneous biomarker regulatory systems. Herein, in an attempt to elucidate the network structure of physiological systems, we probed the inter-variability correlations of 22 biomarkers.

Decreased physical activity and activities of daily living (ADL) in patients on hemodialysis (HD) are associated with a poor prognosis. Additionally, comorbid peripheral arterial disease is associated with further deterioration. We conducted a cross-sectional study of ADL difficulty and life-space assessment (LSA) in three groups of patients on hemodialysis according to their ankle-brachial index (ABI) values.

Iberin is a bioactive chemical found in cruciferous plants that has been demonstrated to have anticancer properties. However, there have been no reports on its effects on periodontal resident cells, and many questions remain unanswered. The aim of this study was to examine whether iberin had anti-inflammatory effects on human oral epithelial cells, including influences on signal transduction pathway activation in TNF-α-στιμυλατεd χελλσ.

Hemodialysis patients with diabetic kidney disease (DKD) experience blood glucose fluctuations owing to insulin removal. We evaluated the effects of single and long-term application of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) during hemodialysis on glycemic control. This trial was conducted in two stages: Stage 1, following a crossover design and 4 week washout period, eleven outpatients with DKD either underwent a single bout of NMES for 30 min (NMES period) or rested (control period) after receiving nutritional support during hemodialysis; Stage 2, following a crossover design and 4 week washout period, each participant received the intervention for 12 weeks.

6-(Methylsulfinyl) hexyl isothiocyanate (6-MSITC) is a bioactive substance found in wasabi (Wasabia japonica) and has been reported to have some bioactive effects including anticancer and antioxidant effects. However, there are no reports on its effects on periodontal resident cells, and many points remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether 6-MSITC exerts anti-inflammatory effects on human oral epithelial cells, including effects on signal transduction pathway activation.

We successfully treated a patient with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH) with stable coronary arterial disease using optimal medical therapy and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) apheresis for 16 years without percutaneous coronary intervention or bypass surgery. Intensive LDL lowering using apheresis and medication protected the patient from coronary atherosclerotic progression even in HoFH.

Coronary spastic angina (CSA) is relatively more common in young people than in elderly people. Here, we present three cases of elderly male patients who experienced out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) likely due to coronary spasm-induced ventricular fibrillation (Vf) from 2013 to 2016. After defibrillation, emergency coronary arteriography demonstrated severe coronary vasospasm that resolved following intracoronary infusion of nitroglycerin in the right coronary arteries in all three patients, with no organic obstructive lesion in the coronary arteries after nitroglycerin infusion.
