Small intestinal bleeding and stricture caused by Meckel's diverticulum.

A 44-year-old man presented to our hospital with lower gastrointestinal bleeding. We performed balloon-assisted enteroscopy, which revealed diverticulum and stricture at the ileum. The patient underwent segmental small bowel resection and diagnosed with Meckel's diverticulum.

Causes of peritoneal injury during laparoscopic totally extraperitoneal inguinal hernia repair and methods of repair.

Introduction: Peritoneal injury during laparoscopic totally extraperitoneal (TEP) inguinal hernia repair is an intraoperative complication that affects accomplishment. We retrospectively examined the causes of peritoneal injury and methods of TEP repair.

Methods: This study examined 58 patients with inguinal hernia (43 unilateral, 15 bilateral) who had undergone TEP repair; all procedures were performed by the same surgeon.

A long-term survival case after surgical resection of skeletal muscle metastasis following esophagectomy for squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus.

Cases of skeletal muscle metastasis of esophageal carcinoma are very rare, with few reports of long-term survival. We report a case of long-term survival after surgical resection of skeletal muscle metastasis. A 56-year-old man with advanced esophageal cancer and early gastric cancer underwent thoracoscopic esophagectomy, 2-field lymph node dissection, partial gastrectomy and gastric tube reconstruction.

[A Case of Cecal Cancer with Multiple Cutaneous Metastases].

We encountered a case of cutaneous metastases from colorectal carcinoma. A 63-year-old woman underwent laparoscopic-assisted ileocecal resection for cecal cancer. Computed tomography (CT) showed multiple liver metastases.

We report a case of laparoscopic gastrectomy in a patient with refractory vasospastic angina. An 83-year-old man received 2 types of oral coronary vasodilators but complained of chest pain about twice a week thereafter. He was diagnosed with refractory vasospastic angina.

A 68-year-old man was admitted to our hospital. He was diagnosed with advanced gastric cancer with multiple liver metastases. The primary tumor was treated with distal gastrectomy with D2 dissection and anti-cancer agents, and then he was scheduled for a 2-stage hepatic resection.

[A case of palliative resection resulting in improvement in quality of life in a patient with colon cancer and simultaneous ovarian metastasis].

A 72-year-old woman was admitted for investigation of lower abdominal bloating and melena. She was diagnosed with rectal cancer with ascites, multiple liver metastases, and large bilateral ovarian metastases. The patient underwent bilateral oophorectomy for the ovarian tumors and a Hartmann procedure for rectal cancer.

[The usefulness of intraoperative Doppler echo and laparoscopic echo in laparoscopic colectomy].

Laparoscopic surgery has been increasingly performed in colon cancer patients; it has also been adapted for cases of advanced colorectal cancer. While performing an operation for rectosigmoid colon cancer, preservation of the left colic artery and prompt and accurate detection of the branch of the left colic artery from the inferior mesenteric artery is important. Detecting the left colon arterial bifurcation takes time, especially because of the presence of mesenteric fat, which is observed in many cases.

In vitro effects of lapatinib with gemcitabine for pancreatic cancer cells.

Background/aims: We investigated whether lapatinib plus gemcitabine has synergistic or antagonistic effects on the pancreatic cancer cell lines MiaPaca-2 and PANC-1. Furthermore, the changes of gemcitabine sensitivity-related genes by lapatinib treatment were examined.

Methodology: The effects of lapatinib, gemcitabine, and combined treatment with both agents on cell viability were examined by methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium analysis.

Significance of phospho-vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 expression in pancreatic cancer.

Vascular endothelial growth factor receptors (VEGFRs) are mainly expressed by endothelial cells, but they are also expressed by some cancer cells, including pancreatic cancer. The objective of this study was to evaluate the significance of VEGFRs expression in pancreatic cancer cells. A total of 107 primary pancreatic tumors were stained with antibodies against VEGFR-1, VEGFR-2, phospho-VEGFR-2 (pVEGFR-2), VEGFR-3, VEGF-A, VEGF-C, and VEGF-D.

In vitro and in vivo evidence that a combination of lapatinib plus S-1 is a promising treatment for pancreatic cancer.

Lapatinib is a small molecule inhibitor of both HER2 and the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). We investigated the effect of treatment with lapatinib alone or in combination with a fluoropyrimidine derivative S-1 against pancreatic cancer. The HER2/EGFR expression in each of the four pancreatic cancer cell lines MiaPaca-2, PANC-1, Capan-1 and Capan-2 was measured by flow cytometry.

HER2 overexpression has been linked to clinical outcomes in several solid tumors, such as breast cancer. However, the correlation between HER2 overexpression and survival in pancreatic carcinoma remains unclear. The impact of HER2 overexpression on survival in pancreatic ductal cancer was examined.

Gastric cancer with cervical lymph node metastasis as the first presentation: report of a case.

A 62-year-old man presented with a painful left lateral neck mass. Aspiration cytology revealed lymph node metastasis of undifferentiated carcinoma. A Borrmann type 3 tumor was detected in the body of the stomach on endoscopic examination.

[A case of gastric cancer with peritoneal recurrence which developed during adjuvant administration of TS-1 showing complete response by weekly docetaxel regimen].

A 62-year old man had undergone total gastrectomy for Borrmann type 4 gastric cancer. No peritoneal dissemination was observed at the laparotomy. Pathological examination revealed that the tumor involved the subserosal layer, and that the lymph node metastasis extended to the left gastric nodes.
