Aim: Cardiac alternans is a dynamical phenomenon linked to the genesis of severe arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. It has been proposed that alternans is caused by alterations in Ca handling by the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR), in both the SR Ca uptake and release processes. The hypertrophic myocardium is particularly prone to alternans, but the precise mechanisms underlying its increased vulnerability are not known.

Methods: A total of 24 eyes of 24 patients suffering from naïve AMD with MNV1 candidates to BIVI as per label with q12/q8 dosing regimen after the loading dose were enrolled in this prospective study. Main outcome measures during a 16-week follow-up period included changes in best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central macular thickness (CMT), subfoveal subretinal fluid (SSRF) thickness (SSRFT), subfoveal sub-retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) fluid thickness (SSRPEFT), subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), and pigment epithelial detachment (PED) maximum height (PED-MH).
Sarcopenia is a prevalent condition in patients with Crohn's disease (CD), representing an independent predictor factor for the development of major postoperative complications. Thus, a proper assessment of the muscle strength, by using different validated tools, should be deemed an important step of the clinical management of these patients. Patients with CD are frequently malnourished, presenting a high prevalence of different macro- and micro-nutrient deficiencies, including that of vitamin D.

Methods: We enrolled 28 patients with diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema candidates to IDI. All patients underwent widefield optical coherence tomography angiography with PLEX Elite 9000 device with 15 × 9 mm scans centered on the foveal center at baseline, 1 month, 2 months, and 4 months after IDI.
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a leading cause of potentially preventable blindness in low birth weight preterm infants. Several perinatal and postnatal factors contribute to the incomplete maturation of retinal vascularization, leading to oxidative stress damage. Literature data suggest that the lack of equilibrium between pro-oxidants and anti-oxidants plays a key role.

Unlabelled: Clinical experience and scientific articles have shown that patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) can be paucisymptomatic or asymptomatic at the time of diagnosis. In this paper, we will discuss two paucisymptomatic patients with blood tests suggestive for SARS-CoV-2 infection but with repeated negative nasopharyngeal swabs and without typical features of COVID-19 pneumonia on chest high-resolution computed tomography. In these cases, lung ultrasound helped to raise clinical suspicion of COVID-19 pneumonia and facilitate diagnosis.

Methods: Twenty CD patients (40 eyes) and 20 healthy controls (20 eyes) were enrolled in this prospective case-control study. Patients underwent full ophthalmological examination, microperimetry, full-field, pattern and multifocal electroretinogram (ERG, PERG, mfERG) and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA).
: the aim of the study was to evaluate the repeatability and reproducibility of optical microangiography (OMAG)-based optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in the optic nerve head (ONH) and radial peripapillary capillary (RPC) perfusion assessment of healthy eyes. : in this observational study, a total of 40 healthy subjects underwent ONH evaluation, using an OMAG-based OCTA system at baseline (T), after 30 min (T), and after 7 days (T). The main outcome measures were the vessel density (VD) and flux index (FI) of the RPCs, as well as peri-papillary retinal nerve fibre layer (pRNFL) thickness.

(1) Background: The aim of this observational cross-sectional work was to investigate early retinal vascular changes in patients undergoing idiopathic epiretinal membrane (iERM) surgery using swept source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA); (2) Methods: 24 eyes of 24 patients who underwent vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling were evaluated pre- and postoperatively using SS-OCTA system (PLEX Elite 9000, Carl Zeiss Meditec Inc., Dublin, CA, USA). For each eye, five 6x6-mm OCTA volume scans were acquired by two observers independently.

It is characterized by congenital microcephaly, intellectual disability, progressive cerebral atrophy, and intractable seizures. A decrease in asparagine in CSF or plasma guides subsequent investigations in some cases, but normal values are described in other cases.

LSCM, IC, and the ocular surface disease index (OSDI) and National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire-25 (NEI VFQ-25) questionnaires, were performed at baseline and after six months.

Unlabelled: Homocystinuria due to cystathionine-β-synthase deficiency (CBS deficiency) usually presents with ectopia lentis, myopia, intellectual disability, skeletal anomalies resembling Marfan syndrome, and thromboembolic events. Whereas neurodevelopment impairments have been often described in untreated homocystinuria adult patients, acute psychosis has rarely been reported as a presenting symptom of the disease. Here, we describe a 17-year-old girl affected by CBS deficiency presenting acute onset of visual hallucinations, behavioral perseverance, psychomotor hyperactivity, and affective inappropriateness.

Ensuring complete viral inactivation is critical for the safety of vaccines based on an inactivated virus. Detection of residual infectious virus is dependent on sensitivity of the assay, sample volume analyzed and the absence of interference with viral infection. Here we describe the development and qualification of a sensitive cell-based assay for the detection of residual infectious West Nile Virus (WNV).

RCA, which arises from homologous recombination between Ad5 vectors and HEK-293 cells, can be eliminated by the use of PER.C6 cells in combination with a matched vector.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLive attenuated human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) vaccines are considered unsafe because more quickly replicating pathogenic virus variants may evolve after vaccination. As an alternative vaccine approach, we have previously presented a doxycycline (dox)-dependent HIV-1 variant that was constructed by incorporating the tetracycline-inducible gene expression system (Tet-On system) into the viral genome. Replication of this HIV-rtTA variant is driven by the dox-inducible transcriptional activator rtTA and can be switched on and off at will.

Quantification of residual DNA from the producing cell line is part of the purity tests for clinical lots. Stringent guidelines stipulate the maximum acceptable level of DNA per dose of vector, and this quantification is therefore a crucial piece of information for researchers and manufacturers alike.

A titration assay adopted commonly for this purpose is the plaque assay on Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells, despite it being time and labour consuming. A novel assay is described for titration of influenza viruses based on the detection of intracellular viral nucleoprotein (NP) by fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS).
