Article Synopsis
  • Constrictive physiology can develop after open-heart surgery, possibly leading to constrictive pericarditis, a rare but serious complication, and colchicine is thought to help prevent this condition.
  • A randomized double-blind trial evaluated the effects of colchicine, comparing 1 mg once daily before surgery and 0.5 mg twice daily for 5 days after among 160 patients.
  • Results showed a reduction in constrictive physiology incidence after 4 weeks for those on colchicine (11%) compared to placebo (23%), indicating that colchicine may offer preventive benefits over a longer term post-surgery.
