Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) DNA load in the prognosis of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) patients, comparing it to standard laboratory factors.
  • In a sample of 40 untreated CLL patients, EBV-DNA was detected in over half, showing significant differences in key blood parameters such as lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and platelet counts between EBV positive and negative individuals.
  • The findings suggest that measuring EBV-DNA load can help predict disease severity and potentially improve patient management in CLL cases.

Background: For the past three years, the pandemic has had a major effect on global public health, mainly on those with underlying medical conditions, such as people living with Multiple Sclerosis. Vaccination among this group is of great importance, and the long-term impacts of vaccination and its safety on the health of these patients will continue to be revealed. Therefore, risks related to vaccination and immune response need to be assessed.

Background/aims: The aim of this study was to determine the rate of natural and breakthrough infection and related symptoms of Covid-19 amongst Iranian healthcare workers (HCWs) who were vaccinated by different non-mRNA-based vaccines at peak points.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, the RT-PCR test was performed for a total of 10,581 HCWs suspicious of Covid-19 infection. For each HCW, the frequency of SARS-CoV-2 infection and the time of transmission based on vaccination administration time and schedule were examined during different waves of the pandemic.

Background And Aim: Herpes simplex viruses (HSV) are one of the most important groups of human pathogenic viruses. The prominent characteristic of this virus is latency and the ability to reactivate. One of the possible factors for reactivation of this virus is dental procedures.

Background And Aims: Although SARS-CoV-2 infection usually leads to mild COVID-19 in children, sometimes it causes serious complications, especially in those with underlying diseases. Several factors have been identified in determining disease severity in adults, and limited studies have been conducted in children. The prognostic implications of SARS-CoV-2 RNaemia as an important factor in determining disease severity in children are not well understood.

Background: Like other viral infections, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 infection could affect different human body systems, including host immune responses. Three years after its pandemic, we learn more about this novel coronavirus. As we expected, different co-infections with various organisms, such as viruses, bacteria, and even fungi, have been reported.

Coronavirus is one of the main pathogens that primarily targets the human respiratory system. There are several ways to transmit this virus, such as direct contact or droplets spread by coughing or sneezing, and direct contact with fomites and surfaces is another way. This cross-sectional study was conducted in Shiraz, southern Iran, in 2021.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the adverse effects of recent coronaviruses on healthcare professionals cannot be ignored. This study compared the admission rates due to Covid-19 and characteristics of hospitalized healthcare workers with the general population of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad (K.B) province.

Objective: The emergence of Acyclovir-Resistant Herpes Simplex Virus type-1, which is the result of clinical over usage calls for the urgent need of a novel anti-HSV agent. Hence, the activity of Triptolide (TP) and (S)-10-Hydroxycamptothecin (10-HCPT) were investigated as natural products in two infection models of HSV-1.

Methods: The antiviral efficacy of TP and 10-HCPT was evaluated in mice ocular and cutaneous infection models of HSV.

Background: Herpes simplex virus-type 1 (HSV-1) can cause diseases, especially amongst neonates and immunocompromised hosts. Hence, developing a novel anti-HSV-1 drug with low-level toxicity is vital. Triptolide (TP), a diterpenoid triepoxide is a natural product with range of bioactivity qualities.

A 34-year-old female clinical virology assistant was punctured with a contaminated lancet used for sampling from a suspected Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease (HFMD) patient. Five days after a puncture, the disease symptoms manifested, including high fever, ague, and stiff neck. Skin rashes suddenly appeared after day 6.

Objectives: Many studies have revealed the role of Epstein-Barr virus infection, in combination with chronic immunosuppression, as the main factor in the development of posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorder malignancy. Although many studies have been published on other confounding factors involved in posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorders, the role of coinfection with both cytomegalovirus and Epstein-Barr virus has not been investigated. We evaluated the role of cytomegalovirus infection as a risk factor in transplant recipients who were simultaneously infected with Epstein-Barr virus.

Background: Small non-coding RNAs have emerged as essential modulators of viral infections such as hepatitis C virus (HCV). Cellular miRNAs directly regulate the viral infectivity and indirectly by targeting virus-host factors. The current study investigates the inhibitory effect of let-7b miRNA on HCV replication in the Hepatocarcinoma cell line (Huh7.

There is ambiguity about the airborne transmission of the SARS-CoV-2. While a distance of 6 feet is considered a safe physical distance, new findings show that the virus can be transmitted more than that distance and cause infection. In hospitals, this may cause the virus to be transmitted from the treatment wards of COVID-19 patients to adjacent wards and infect medical staff, non-COVID-19 patients, and patient companions.

Background: As a major carotenoid in saffron, crocin demonstrates potent anti-cancer impacts. However, its anti-lymphoma effects remain vague, especially in the human EBV-associated B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders. This study examined crocin's apoptogenic potential and its underlying mechanism in CO 88BV59-1 cell line vs.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a positive-sense, single-stranded RNA virus that causes chronic hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Cellular microRNAs (miRNAs) directly modulate the viral infectivity and indirectly through targeting virus-related host factors. They play an essential role in the progression of different stages of HCV infection.

Introduction: This study aimed to determine the viral agent (s) and their genome burden associated with an aseptic meningitis outbreak that occurred in Yasuj, Iran.

Materials And Methods: During April to August 2015, 104 CSF samples from 104 patients under 14 years old admitted to the hospital of Yasuj, Iran, with aseptic meningitis associated clinical signs were collected. 200 μl CSF specimens was prepared for DNA and RNA viral genome extraction each and then subjected to diagnostic Taq-man real time PCR assays for the present of Enteroviruses, HSV, VZV, mumps, measles and rubella in the samples.

Article Synopsis
  • Viral hepatitis is a significant global health issue, with this study focusing on determining the seroprevalence of hepatitis virus markers in Hormozgan province, Iran.
  • A total of 562 individuals were tested, revealing a high seroprevalence of anti-hepatitis A virus (93.2%) and notable levels of hepatitis E (15.8%) and hepatitis B (2.5%), while hepatitis C was very low (0.7%).
  • The findings indicate a strong prevalence of hepatitis A and a concerning level of endemicity for hepatitis E, suggesting a need for vaccination against hepatitis A and better sanitation practices in the region.
