Adherence to a vegan diet may lower risk of cardiovascular disease among African Americans (AAs). Feasibility and sustainability of adopting a vegan diet may be challenging among AAs who live in regions where soul food is a predominant cuisine. Our hypothesis was that AAs randomized to a culturally adapted vegan diet will have greater adherence to their assigned diet compared with those randomized to a culturally adapted omnivorous diet.

Background: The mechanisms that mediate immune protection in individuals with subclinical (SC) or asymptomatic infection with Leishmania braziliensis are largely unknown. Neutrophils (polymorphonuclear leukocytes [PMNs]) have been implicated in progressive symptomatic cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), but their potential participation in maintenance of subclinical infection is unexplored. The aim of this study was to compare the phenotypic and functional profiles of PMNs in individuals with SC infection versus patients with symptomatic CL due to L braziliensis.

Purpose: Information on concerns that young adults (YAs) with cancer face when receiving care outside of specialized treatment centers is needed to increase equitable care to YAs at greater risk of marginalization by the health care system. The current study compared distress and unmet needs at the time of clinic visit between YAs receiving care from three different cancer clinics: (1) a National Cancer Institute-designated center, (2) a community-based clinic, and (3) a county hospital outpatient clinic.

Methods: The Adolescent and Young Adult Psycho-Oncology Screening Tool (AYA-POST) was administered to measure distress and cancer-related concerns of YAs in active treatment.

The pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has highlighted the need for simple, low-cost, and scalable diagnostics that can be widely deployed for rapid testing. Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-based diagnostics have emerged as a promising technology, but its implementation in clinical laboratories has been limited by the requirement of a separate amplification step prior to CRISPR-associated (Cas) enzyme-based detection. This article reports the discovery of two novel Cas12 enzymes (SLK9 and SLK5-2) that exhibit enzymatic activity at 60°C, which, when combined with loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP), enable a real-time, single-step nucleic acid detection method [real-time SHERLOCK (real-time SLK)].

Article Synopsis
  • - Filarial infections affect over 150 million people in tropical regions, often causing lymphedema, which alters immune responses and could change the behavior of skin bacteria in affected individuals.
  • - A study conducted in Ghana analyzed 160 lymphedema patients by taking samples from their ulcers and skin to test for antibiotic resistance, revealing high resistance rates to multiple antibiotics, including chloramphenicol and tetracycline.
  • - Results showed that a significant portion of bacteria isolated from these patients were methicillin-resistant, indicating that treating infections in lymphedema patients may be challenging due to reduced effectiveness of antibiotics.
