Problem: In 2018, Creighton University School of Medicine initiated a multiyear strategy to redesign the pedagogic approach of its educational program, transitioning from large-group, lecture-based experiences to small-group, active learning experiences using case-based learning (CBL) as required prework for team-based learning (TBL). In July 2019, the authors introduced their first-year medical students to the pedagogic and empiric underpinnings of the new curriculum they would experience. Neuroblastomas (NBL) and Ewing's sarcomas (EWS) together cause 18% of all pediatric cancer deaths. Though there is growing interest in targeting the dysregulated metabolism of cancer as a therapeutic strategy, this approach has not been fully examined in NBL and EWS. In this study, we first tested a panel of metabolic inhibitors and identified the glutamine antagonist 6-diazo-5-oxo-L-norleucine (DON) as the most potent chemotherapeutic across all NBL and EWS cell lines tested.

Purpose: Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV) represents a developmental eye disease known to have diverse manifestations ranging from a trivial remnant of hyaloid vessels to a dense fibrovascular mass causing lens opacity and retinal detachment. PHPV can be modeled in mice lacking individual genes, but certain features of such models differ from the clinical realm. For example, mice lacking the Arf gene have uniformly severe disease with consistent autosomal recessive disease penetrance.

This paper describes the initial development and implementation of the Starting Well Health Demonstration Project, Scotland's national child health demonstration project. The Project, initially launched in 2000, aims to demonstrate that child health can be improved by a program of activities that both supports families and provides them with access to enhanced community-based resources. Early process outcomes will be presented and policy implications arising out of the Project to date will be explored.
