Article Synopsis
  • Pancreatic cancer has a poor prognosis, highlighting the need for new strategies in treatment, particularly related to mitochondrial function which is often disrupted in various cancers, including pancreatic.
  • TOMM22, a receptor in the mitochondrial protein import system, is found to be overexpressed in pancreatic cancer and linked to worse outcomes, suggesting it plays a vital role in cancer progression by affecting mitochondrial functions.
  • Targeting TOMM22 may provide opportunities for early diagnosis and treatment improvements for patients with pancreatic cancer.*

Mitochondria are double membrane-bound organelles that play critical functions in cells including metabolism, energy production, regulation of intrinsic apoptosis, and maintenance of calcium homeostasis. Mitochondria are fascinatingly equipped with their own genome and machinery for transcribing and translating 13 essential proteins of the oxidative phosphorylation system (OXPHOS). The rest of the proteins (99%) that function in mitochondria in the various pathways described above are nuclear-transcribed and synthesized as precursors in the cytosol.
