Dimensions of catastrophic thinking associated with pain experience and disability in patients with neuropathic pain conditions.

The objective of the present study was to examine the relative contributions of different dimensions of catastrophic thinking (i.e. rumination, magnification, helplessness) to the pain experience and disability associated with neuropathic pain.

Prenatal cocaine exposure: a comparison of 2-year-old children in parental and nonparental care.

Effects of prenatal cocaine exposure and parental versus nonparental care on outcome at 2 years of age were examined. The sample included 83 cocaine-exposed and 63 nonexposed children and their caregivers; 49 and 34 of the cocaine-exposed children experienced parental and nonparental care, respectively. Prenatal drug exposure was not related directly to children's outcome at 2 years of age.

Parents' perceptions of their infant's pain experience in the NICU.

Despite numerous advances in the recognition, assessment, and management of pain in neonates over the past two decades, there has been limited improvement in the knowledge base regarding parental responses to their infant's pain. This study examined parents' views of their experiences observing and coping with their infant's pain in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Twelve participants were recruited using purposive sampling from two groups: (a) parents who had infants currently receiving care in the NICU (n=6); and (b) parents whose infants had been discharged from the NICU and were enrolled in the outpatient follow-up clinic at each hospital (n=6).

Examining delinquency in adolescents differentially prenatally exposed to alcohol: the role of proximal and distal risk factors.

Objective: An association has been reported between prenatal alcohol exposure and delinquent behavior in adolescents. Problems are believed to be particularly significant for those who were exposed prenatally but do not have full fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). The goals of this study were (1) to examine the relation between a range oflevels of prenatal exposure and delinquent behavior in a community sample and (2) to examine the effect of other current risk factors, in addition to prenatal exposure, on delinquent behavior.

Intravenous adenosine alleviates neuropathic pain: a double blind placebo controlled crossover trial using an enriched enrolment design.

Adenosine analogs produce analgesic actions in nociceptive paradigms and alleviate manifestations of neuropathic pain in nerve injury models in rodents. In humans, previous work indicates an analgesic effect for adenosine administered intravenously in postoperative and neuropathic pain. In this double blind placebo controlled crossover trial, we used an enriched enrolment design to determine the effects of intravenous adenosine (50 microg/kg/min over 60min) on neuropathic pain.

Cannabis use for chronic non-cancer pain: results of a prospective survey.

There has been a surge in interest in medicinal cannabis in Canada. We conducted a questionnaire survey to determine the current prevalence of medicinal cannabis use among patients with chronic non-cancer pain, to estimate the dose size and frequency of cannabis use, and to describe the main symptoms for which relief was being sought. Over a 6-week period in mid-2001, 209 chronic non-cancer pain patients were recruited in an anonymous cross-sectional survey.
