Background: Blunt chest injuries not treated in a timely manner with sufficient analgesia, physiotherapy and respiratory support are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The aim of the study was to determine the impact of a blunt chest injury early activation protocol (ChIP) on patient and hospital outcomes.
Methods: In this pre-post cohort study, the outcomes of patients with blunt chest injury who received ChIP were compared against those who did not.

Background: Severely injured children may have better outcomes when transported directly to a Paediatric Trauma Centre (PTC). A case identification system using the crew of a physician staffed helicopter emergency medical service (P-HEMS) that identified severely injured children for P-HEMS dispatch was previously associated with high rates of direct transfer. It was theorised that discontinuation of this system may have resulted in deterioration of system performance.

The financial burden of a high trauma casemix to designated trauma centres in Australia has not been previously determined, and there is some evidence that the episode funding model used in Australia results in the underfunding of trauma.
Aim: To describe the costs of acute trauma admissions in trauma centres, identify predictors of higher treatment costs and cost variance in New South Wales (NSW), Australia.
Objective: To examine trends in mechanism and outcome of major traumatic injury in adults since the implementation of the New South Wales trauma monitoring program, and to identify factors associated with mortality.
Design And Setting: Retrospective review of NSW Trauma Registry data from 1 January 2003 to 31 December 2007, including patient demographics, year of injury, and level of trauma centre where definitive treatment was provided.
Participants: 9769 people aged ≥ 15 years hospitalised for trauma, with an injury severity score (ISS) > 15.
Background: In Australia and New Zealand, surgical trainees are expected to develop competencies across 9 domains. Although structured training is provided in several domains, there is little or no formal program for professionalism, communication, collaboration, and management and leadership. The Australian federal Department of Health and Aging funded a pilot course in simulation-based education to address these competencies for surgical trainees.

A computerized search of the Medline and Embase databases identified 28 non-duplicated studies including 703 patients in whom laparoscopic hepatectomy was attempted.
