Overcoming Barriers to Palliative Care Consultation.

Palliative care consultations for patients with life-threatening illnesses provide benefits for the patients and their families as well as for the health care team. Patients have better quality of life and live longer but cost the health care system less. Still, many patients are not offered the opportunity to receive a palliative care consultation.

Working together.

Standards released by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer program in 2012 call for all patients with cancer to have access to palliative care and for institutions to provide skilled and coordinated care as patients traverse through multiple healthcare settings. Many healthcare providers do not understand what palliative care can provide, or how it differs from hospice or end-of-life care. Oncology nurses and advanced practice nurses play an important role in educating healthcare providers, patients, and families about the role of palliative care and implementing it in the care of patients with cancer.

The silence of suffering: breaking the sound barriers.

Suffering is an inevitable reality that student nurses may be unprepared to witness. The 14-week college course, Understanding Suffering, was developed to help students better understand the suffering experience. Content for the course was drawn from nursing, sociological, and theological perspectives.
