A Reliable Protocol for Fiberoptic Nasal Intubation.

Nasotracheal intubation is crucial for many oral and maxillofacial surgery procedures; however, it presents more challenges than orotracheal intubation and requires a higher level of training, along with various execution options. The routine use of an endotracheal tube (ETT)-first nasal fiberoptic intubation protocol is recommended, specifically in cases where orotracheal intubation is not possible or feasible. In this proposed technique, 137 randomly selected patients underwent fiberoptic nasotracheal intubation for general anesthesia utilizing a strict ETT first protocol.

Most Facial Fractures Do Not Require Surgical Intervention.

Purpose: Literature describing the number of patients that had a facial fracture that required surgical intervention in the United States is very limited. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the percentage of patients who required surgical intervention after presenting to a Level 1 Trauma Center with 1 or more facial fractures.

Materials And Methods: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study of all patients who presented with facial fracture(s) to University Hospital, a Level 1 Trauma Center (San Antonio, Texas), over a 5-year period from July 2015 to July 2020.

Gender Differences in Academic Productivity and Advancement Among Dental School Faculty.

An equal number of women and men are now graduating from dental school, but women dentists have lower income and are less likely to achieve positions of leadership, including within dental academia. Demographic information and academic rank were obtained for all faculty at the eight dental schools who received the most funding from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research in 2017. Years since dental school graduation, total number of PubMed-indexed citations, first- and last-author publications, and H-index were determined for each faculty member.
