The number of deaths owing to poor surgical care or its non-availability has been reported to exceed those from HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined. Introduction: Uganda has until recently mostly referred patients for complex hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery abroad due to lack of local expertize. The rickettsial pathogen Orientia tsutsugamushi, causing scrub typhus, has been implicated as a major cause of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) in many places in India including Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh. Seasonal abundance of the principal vector mite of the pathogen, Leptotrombidium deliense, its animal hosts, and prevalence of infection on them are important attributes in the assessment of outbreaks of the disease. Hence, these aspects were investigated, seasonally, in rural villages of Gorakhpur district, where peak incidence of AES cases were reported.

Outbreaks of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) with high fatality and disability, are reported every year in the Gorakhpur region of Uttar Pradesh, India, with the etiology of >60% of the cases being attributed to scrub typhus. In the present study, the prevalence of Orientia tsutsugamushi, the etiological agent of scrub typhus, was investigated among animal hosts and their ectoparasitic trombiculid mites prevalent in AES-reported areas of Gorakhpur. A total of 154 rodents/shrews were collected using 777 Sherman traps set in 12 study villages, and the overall trap rate was 19.

Filarial antigen detection is an appropriate epidemiological indicator for mapping lymphatic filariasis and impact evaluation of filariasis elimination programme in view of low sensitivity of parasite detection. Monoclonal antibody-based Og4C3 immunological test requires 100 µl serum, which is difficult to collect by finger prick method during community based surveys. Hence, we tested lesser volume of serum compared to standard volume of 100 µl to compare its sensitivity and specificity in detecting the circulating filarial antigens.

Monoclonal antibodies (Mabs) against excretory/secretary (e/s) antigens of fourth stage (L4) larvae of Wuchereria bancrofti were raised and screened for their specificity and sensitivity and evaluated for their potential in detecting homologous e/s antigens in human blood samples. Five Mabs were obtained and, among them, Mab A7 showed high reactivity against e/s antigens of L4 and crude somatic antigens of microfilariae (mf) of W. bancrofti, and infective stage (L3) and adult stage larvae of Brugia malayi.

Extracts from plants of Loranthaceae family collected from 15 host trees were screened for their cytocidal activity to tumour cells. Biologically active extracts prepared from Helicanthis elasticus grown on Mangifera indica and Citrus maxima (host trees) were partially purified by the gel filtration method. The purified material was found to be cytotoxic in vitro and reduced solid and ascites tumours in mice when given either simultaneously or prophylactically.

It has been reported that third stage larvae (L3) of Wuchereria bancrofti strain from Jakarta, molted to the fourth stage (L4) in vitro, in a simple culture medium supplemented with 10% human serum. In the present study, this culture medium has been used to examine the effects of some physico-chemical parameters on larval growth, development and molting of Wuchereria bancrofti from India. Lymph at 10% concentration enhanced the in vitro survival time of larvae.
