Communication and patient safety in simulation for mental health nursing education.

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) found that 65% of medical sentinel events or medical errors are associated with communication breakdowns. In addition to the JCAHO, The Institute of Medicine, in their Core Competencies for health care professional education, recommend improvement in professional communication, collaboration, and a patient-centered approach to provide safety. Consistency of opportunities for students to practice their communication and collaboration skills is limited based on the variety of clinical experiences that are available.

National Library of Medicine and the Marine Biological Laboratory Biomedical Informatics Fellowship--one team's experience.

Drexel University College of Nursing and Health Professions incorporates informatics in all aspects of the undergraduate and graduate curriculums. Four members of the Informatics Team completed the National Library of Medicine and the Marine Biological Laboratory's Informatics Fellowship. The standardized patient experience in undergraduate nursing education.

Drexel University College of Nursing and Health Professions was the first Undergraduate Nursing Program to incorporate the Standardized Patient Experience as a requirement for the completion of the Undergraduate Nursing Degree. This requirement has resulted in positive student outcomes and increased student satisfaction.
