Purpose: To determine whether the administration of intra-arterial carboplatin affected the hearing of children with retinoblastoma.
Methods: Children with retinoblastoma who were treated with intra-arterial carboplatin chemotherapy were included. Hearing tests before chemotherapy including tympanometry, distortion product otoacoustic emissions, and audiogram (if achievable) were performed and repeated 3 to 9 months after concluding intra-arterial therapy.
Background: The EXOFFIT study compared the effectiveness of three time-matched exercise interventions in women with obesity for improving cardiorespiratory fitness. To best inform future research, evaluation of the interventions' acceptability is needed. Previous research has been inconsistent with methods and reporting of acceptability.

Despite comprising almost 8% of the population of the United States, sexual and gender minority (SGM) patients with cancer experience health inequities with poorer outcomes than non-SGM patients. Although sex-based guidelines.

To date, literature on women with obesity has focused upon the evaluation of aerobic-based exercise interventions. Hence, there is a need to evaluate resistance and combined interventions with this cohort.

Objectives: This article shares the development and implementation of SEEK™ (Spirit of Inquiry, Expanding EBP Knowledge), an educational initiative on how to apply EBP processes at a Magnet®- and National Cancer Institute- designated comprehensive cancer center.
Overweight and obesity are consistently associated with lower physical activity (PA) levels and greater sedentary behavior (SB) in population studies. To date, no review has evaluated the factors associated with these behaviors in the specific population who have developed obesity/overweight. The aim of this systematic review was to identify the correlates/determinants of SB and PA in adults with overweight and obesity.

This condition, which is characterized by electrolyte imbalances, can be life-threatening, causing arrhythmias, seizures, acute kidney injury, and multiple organ failure. The prevention and treatment of tumor lysis syndrome requires immediate recognition of patients at risk for its development.

Ice cores from the northwestern Tibetan Plateau (NWTP) contain long records of regional climate variability, but refrozen meltwater and dust in these cores has hampered development of robust timescales. Here, we introduce an approach to dating the ice via the isotopic composition of atmospheric O in air bubbles (δO), along with annual layer counting and radiocarbon dating. We provide a robust chronology for water isotope records (δO and d-excess) from three ice cores from the Guliya ice cap in the NWTP.

This study investigates beta (β) activities of radionuclides from four ice cores in the Third Pole (TP) to understand the transport routes and related atmospheric processes affecting the radionuclides deposition in glaciers of the region. All the ice cores show three major β activity peaks in the ice layers corresponding to 1963, 1986, and 2011.

Many nurses express a lack of comfort and capability in the care of patients who are dying. Having little end-of-life (EOL) education, experience, and support can contribute to these sentiments. The aim of this project was to evaluate the impact of an electronic order set that included evidence-based medications and structured symptom assessments on nurses’ self-perceived capability and comfort with EOL care.

Methods: The End-Of-Life Professional Caregiver Survey (EPCS) was used to determine the EOL educational needs of CTNs and collect demographics on years of experience, education, past EOL-specific training, and possession of their own advanced directive. The "Surprise Question" was also asked to explore the percent of patients on clinical trials who may be nearing EOL.
Objective: To describe the development and implementation of a novel tool designed to enhance nurse-patient communication in a major academic cancer center, which nurses can learn quickly, incorporate into their primary palliative care practice, and broadly disseminate in order to improve the patient experience.
Method: An evidence-based empathic communication tool and educational program were designed to provide essential skills to oncology nurses in having discussions with patients about their personal values. Evaluation included nurse focus groups, pre- and post-course evaluations and interviews, and patient questionnaires.
Introduction: Obesity in women has more than doubled in the past thirty years. Increasing research suggests that increased cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) can largely attenuate the negative health risks associated with obesity. Though previous literature suggests that combined training may be the most effective for improving CRF in adults with obesity, there is minimal research investigating the efficacy of combined and resistance programmes in women with obesity.

Methods: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published between January 1988 and October 2020 was conducted. The RCTs were screened using the following inclusion criteria: 1) participants: women aged 18 to 65 years with BMI > 30 kg/m and without comorbidities; 2) intervention: exercise; 3) comparison: non-intervention control; and 4) outcomes measures: cardiorespiratory fitness (maximal oxygen consumption), body composition (i.
Background: Glacier ice archives information, including microbiology, that helps reveal paleoclimate histories and predict future climate change. Though glacier-ice microbes are studied using culture or amplicon approaches, more challenging metagenomic approaches, which provide access to functional, genome-resolved information and viruses, are under-utilized, partly due to low biomass and potential contamination.
Results: We expand existing clean sampling procedures using controlled artificial ice-core experiments and adapted previously established low-biomass metagenomic approaches to study glacier-ice viruses.

At Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK), we have integrated and systematized health-related values discussions led by oncology nurses for newly diagnosed cancer patients as part of routine comprehensive cancer care. Such conversations include not only the patient's wishes for care at the end of life but also more holistic personal values, including sources of strength, concerns, hopes, and their definition of an acceptable quality of life.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFPurpose: High-quality cancer care must incorporate patients' personal values in decision making throughout illness. Unfortunately, patient values are neither consistently elicited nor easily accessible in the electronic health record (EHR). Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is deploying a major EHR innovation, called the Patient Values Tab, which provides ready access to patients' values and personhood.

Objectives: Evidence suggests that shiftwork results in adverse occupational health outcomes. This paper contributes to the literature by estimating the separate health effects of night and irregular shiftwork on a longitudinal panel of US workers.
Methods: Data from a 20-year panel of worker surveys from the 1979 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth were used to predict self-reported health limitations related to night and irregular shiftwork using a series of random effects logit models.
Background: Most cancer treatment is provided in the ambulatory setting; thus, it is important to know what issues ambulatory oncology nurses identify in their practice with older cancer patients as well as resources that are helpful or are needed.
Objective: The aim of this study was to capture ambulatory oncology nurses' perceptions of the unique aspects of caring for older patients and to present the development process, content validity testing, and psychometric evaluation of a survey designed to denote nurse perceptions of older adult care.
Methods: An expert panel and 2 focus groups informed the development of a 34-item survey scored on a 5-point Likert-type agreement scale and 2 open-ended questions.
The glaciers near Puncak Jaya in Papua, Indonesia, the highest peak between the Himalayas and the Andes, are the last remaining tropical glaciers in the West Pacific Warm Pool (WPWP). Here, we report the recent, rapid retreat of the glaciers near Puncak Jaya by quantifying the loss of ice coverage and reduction of ice thickness over the last 8 y. Photographs and measurements of a 30-m accumulation stake anchored to bedrock on the summit of one of these glaciers document a rapid pace in the loss of ice cover and a ∼5.

Background: Financial toxicity refers to the unintended financial consequences and distress that patients and families can incur during treatment of cancer. Financial issues can add further stress to an already stressful situation.
Objectives: This article aims to increase awareness of the financial burden of cancer treatment in older adults with cancer and its effect on health-related quality of life for patients and their families and to increase knowledge of institutional and community resources to help patients manage financial concerns.
