Primary afferent neurons of the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) transduce peripheral nociceptive signals and transmit them to the spinal cord. These neurons also mediate analgesic control of the nociceptive inputs, particularly through the μ-opioid receptor (encoded by ). While opioid receptors are found throughout the neuraxis and in the spinal cord tissue itself, intrathecal administration of μ-opioid agonists also acts directly on nociceptive nerve terminals in the dorsal spinal cord resulting in marked analgesia.

Using transcriptomics and multiplex in situ hybridization, we identified the most highly regulated receptors and signaling molecules in rat dorsal spinal cord in peripheral inflammatory and post-surgical incisional pain models. We examined a time course of the response including acute (2 hours) and longer term (2 day) time points after peripheral injury representing the early onset and instantiation of hyperalgesic processes.

Infections in humans typically occur in tropical and subtropical regions, regions with limited medical access, and areas with poor hygiene and living conditions. Infestations in humans have been described in subcutaneous, nasal, ocular, oropharyngeal, and orotracheal cases; however, reports of pulmonary myiasis in humans in the United States and other developed countries are extremely rare.

Primary Data Source: The Department of Veterans Affairs Learners' Perceptions Survey (2003-2013). The nationally administered survey asked a representative sample of 56,569 U.
Purpose: To determine whether a process change impacted the proportion of orders for single-agent, high-dose methotrexate entered by chemotherapy pharmacists instead of general pharmacy staff. Coordination of antiemetic premedication and leucovorin rescue with the new method of order entry was evaluated.
Methods: Adults treated with single-agent, high-dose methotrexate were identified retrospectively.
Background: The nursing profession is exploring how academic-practice partnerships should be structured to maximize the potential benefits for each partner. As part of an evaluation of the U.S.

We conducted national surveys with nursing faculty from VANA partnership sites in 2011 (N = 133) and 2012 (N = 74). Faculty who spent more hours per week in the VANA role and who reported an increase in satisfaction with their participation in VANA were more likely to have been influenced by their VANA experience in choosing to pursue a higher degree (p < .

VA is an ideal setting for educating nursing students owing to a well-educated registered nurse staff, an array of traditional and nontraditional settings, a state-of-the-art computerized electronic health record system, and a unique patient population. Challenges related to the complex nature of VANA partnerships, conceptualized as strategic alliances created between disparate subunits, each embedded in a larger organization, require careful governance to ensure smooth implementation.

Little research has been conducted to discern the specific needs of patients with cancer and their family members, despite the number of oncology-related hospital admissions each year. The purpose of this descriptive study was to determine the specific needs of patients and family members during an inpatient oncology admission. A convenience sample of 54 participants (27 patients and 27 family members) was obtained.

Background: Nurse-nurse collaboration (NNC) is recommended to reduce medical errors and improve patient care and nurses' job satisfaction. While instruments are available to measure nurse-physician collaboration, an instrument to measure NNC was not available in the literature.
Burn rehabilitation is an essential component of successful patient care. In May 2008, a group of burn rehabilitation clinicians met to discuss the status and future needs of burn rehabilitation. Fifteen topic areas pertinent to clinical burn rehabilitation were addressed.

Kernberg and others have observed that psychoanalytic education has tended to promote the acquisition of theoretical knowledge and clinical technique within an atmosphere of indoctrination rather than of exploration. As a corrective, he proposed four models that correspond to values in psychoanalytic education: the art academy, the technical trade school, the religious seminary and the university. He commended models of the university and art academy to our collective attention because of their combined effectiveness in providing for the objective and subjective education of candidates: the university model for its capacity to provide a critical sense of a wide range of theories in an atmosphere tolerating debate and difference, and the art academy model for its capacity to facilitate the expression of individual creativity.

Interventions include pressure appliances, massage, exercise, and positioning devices. The objective of this study was to identify factors associated with the development of neck contractures and optimal treatment strategies for their prevention.

Background: Nurse-physician collaboration has been studied using a variety of instruments. The ability to generalize the outcomes of studies and build on the findings is predicated on acceptable validity and reliability metrics of these instruments.
